To answer the original question. Yes the 2008 Duromax is not rated as high for towing as the 2006. There was some emission control added to the 2008 and some internal changes as well. That was second hand info, but from a mechanic friend who works on my 2006 duramax and drives one.

I had a 03 Duramax ext cab 2wd and now have a 06 Duramax cc 4x4. The cc makes the tow ratings lower or it did on my 03. The truck with 2wd or 4x4 had the same tow rating. The only rear grearing you can get with a Duramax is a 3:73. This I have wondered about as with Ford and Dodge you can get different gear ratios. In 06 and 03 they all had the 245 tires.
