Tow vehicle for a Grand Design 379
I am looking at an older tv like a 1 ton dually diesel. i have an f250 with the 7.3 diesel and towing package. I know it has the power but not the suspension. Financially I will look for an older 1 ton. Just frustrated doing all the research. Seems like Dodge can handle more weight. We are talking loaded 16,000 and a pin weight above 3000lb.

Just a thought...is there anyway you could swing a 2011 or newer but not older truck? In 2011 all three (Ram, Ford Chevy) improved their trucks.
The newer trucks have a lot more power than the previous trucks. Not 100% sure how much the SRW trucks of 2011 can carry. I think I remember the 2011 F-350 SRW weighing 7,300 lbs. with about a 11,300 GVWR.

I just traded my F250 7.3 for a dually F350 6.0. I swore I'd never own a 6.0 because of the issues they had. I say "had" because most of them were fixed years ago.
My 6.0 has tons of power. Getting ready to tow our 5th wheel.
I have the torque pro app to monitor all that I can.

If it wasn't bullet proofed then wasn't fixed.

There are many stock 6.0s with 200,000 miles and more.
Probably more stock 6.0s than bulletproofed.
Add a tuner to get more HP...forget it.

Good Luck with that... Let us know how it is going in a year or two!

Fords 6.0 was a complete blunder. Look up how much Ford paid out in warranty repairs. Ford dumped Navistar because they couldn't even get the 6.4 right. I have a buddy that has an 05 F350 6.0. I ran into him at Home Depot a few months ago. He said his head gasket let go. He said he was on the interstate just cruising along, all gauges were reading normal and then his head gasket blew. No warning signs. His is all stock too. He's the original owner too.
Buying a 6.0 is like buying a fixer upper house. Yes there are those that have zero issues and probably a good portion have. But the number of those % that have had issues is way higher than those than own a Cummins or Dmax.
One of the biggest diesel after market businesses is bullet proofing 6.0's. No one buys a Cummins or Dmax with the idea that it needs bullet proofed to be reliable. People bullet proof them for two reasons. To fix what just happened or to prevent what probably will happen.
Like Clint Eastwood says, "Are you feeling lucky?"

There are millions of 6.0s out there running strong. They are a high tech engine that needs maintenance to go with it.
Ask your buddy if he stuck wix filters on it. Did he add cetane booster with every fill up? Change fuel filters religiously and use motorcraft filters? Change coolant every 30,000?

Or, just pull the heads, throw some ARP studs and a triple stack gasket on there and be done with it. The 6.0 is a strong motor, but I wouldn't drive one that I relied on without doing studs and gasket.

If you add more hp with a tuner, I'm pretty sure your going to put more pressure on those already weak head gaskets. Not trying to be a downer, but my brother worked for Ford for years, and every time I would go to his shop there were at least 2 trucks (6
0's ) with the cab lifted off the truck waiting for head gaskts, studs and oil coolers to be replaced. Now he works at a Ford only shop that specializes in bullet proofing the 6.0's. Now this shop has at least 2 or 3 in at a time getting that done. I will admit the 6.0's can be built up pretty mean. They sound awesome, but it takes a lot of hard earned cash to do it. Most of the guys trucks my brothers shop work on in Humboldt County CA have huge amounts of disposal cash to lay down if you know what I mean.
Hey, you made the trade, now go easy on it until you can bullet prof that motor. You'll be much happier in the end, and will have a pretty reliable pickup truck to haul with.
As a side note, when my brother was working for Ford, I was working for Dodge as the Ctd guy across town. I can tell you he had way more horror stories about Fords, than I did working on Dodge ctd. Just had to put that jab in there. ;-)Seriously though, think about doing those upgrades.

I would never buy a truck I had to fix to use it.

If you can fix one up that you got a good deal on especially a diesel truck, to some that beats paying $50 or $60k on a new one. Trucks are way over priced now, and have been for a long time.

Amen brother....salesgirl said new F350 single rear wheel crew cab Diesel is $1000.00 a month payments.
I'm enjoying my 15,000 dually crew cab long bed 4X4. I did the oil and egr cooler that lasted the previous owner a 100,000 miles. So who knows if he changed coolant.
I have no plans to do any mods. This engine had plenty of power. I have the torque pro app so I can monitor just about anything I need to.

If I remember correctly, the egr,oil cooler, and the coolant was the main issue. I'm sure that combo caused the head gaskets to deteriorate prematurely. Sounds like your on the right track.
