Tow vehicle test. Tesla model X, Mercedes EQC and Audi Etron.

Interesting read.

No surprises there. Model X is most efficient without the trailer...stands to reason it would be the most efficient with a trailer. I'm curious to see what Tesla and Rivian bring to market. Don't see a tow vehicle making do with less than 400 miles of range when not hauling.

The guys at TFL were not impressed:

One hour of charging for 1.5 hrs of driving. And that's not even a regular travel trailer.

If you got a Tesla to be a tow vehicle, you're doing it wrong.

Agree, towing with a EV unless across town is dumb. But if you have any common sense, you will have a diesel pickup.

Best use case for an electric pickup will likely be personal or commercial trucks used in a metropolitan area, especially if they go to a yard at night. Those vehicles don't go long distances and spend a lot of time idling or in traffic. For businesses with a fleet of vehicles, an EV would provide substantial savings on fuel and maintenance. The range isn't there for hauling long distance, but for a second family vehicle that doesn't leave town and can double as a work truck it's perfect.

A pickup is nice but not the solution for everyone. May have two or maximum 3 parking spots at home. One for the boat or small trailer and two for the daily drivers. Weekend camping is usually within a 150 km of home or less. No need for long haul capability. A tow capable SUV is a good fit for many in this type of situation. I’ve talked to a few X drivers pulling boats or small weekend trailers and they are pretty happy with them and not having to have a truck let alone the invonvenience of a gas or diesel vehicle. Pickups or great for heavy hauls or if you need the utility but I’m glad those days are over for us.

In Europe the model 3 comes with a tow hitch. Think the rating is only 910 kilograms though so quite a bit lower than the model X. Much smaller vehicle though.
