I was just over on another thread (scfella, about tongue weight).

TXiceman said:

GCWR - loaded vehicle = max loaded trailer weight (note: not dry weight).

GVWR - loaded vehicle = max loaded trailer hitch or tongue weight. (Note: not dry weight.

Okay, then... does the "loaded vehicle" above include the tongue weight in the first formula?

So, let's say:

Loaded trailer weight: 4500 lbs
Tongue weight, @ 15%: 675 lbs
Loaded vehicle weight: 5100 lbs (not including tongue weight)
Vehicle GCWR; 10250
Vehicle GVWR: 6411

10250 - 5100 = 5150 max trailer weight, so I'm okay there.
10250 - 5775 = 4475 max trailer weight if TV weight needs to include tongue weight, so I would need to lose 25 lbs of trailer cargo.
6411 - 5100 = 1311 max tongue weight, so I'm okay there.

If tongue weight is more like 12.5% (560 lbs), I think I'm okay across the board, but am I missing something?

Also, while the above looks okay to me (unless I'm misunderstanding), do I still have a problem with the stated tow rating of 5200 lbs:
5200 lbs - 300 lbs cargo - 560 lbs (tongue weight at 12.5%) = 4340, which is less than the 4500 lb trailer weight.

So which is correct? (Still trying to learn)

I was using the formula TXiceman gave in the other thread:
GVWR - loaded vehicle = max loaded trailer hitch or tongue weight. (Note: not dry weight.

My GVWR is 6411, and my loaded vehicle weight is 5100. So, 6411-5100=1311, which should be the max tongue weight, according to the formula.

It's entirely possible that I'm not using this correctly--that the formula was only for a particular situation, or has limits I'm unaware of. Just trying to take what I saw and apply it. I'm still trying to learn.

I suppose my vehicle might have a tongue weight rating, too, but I can't find it in the owner's manual. All I've found is a vague discussion of having to calculate it, jumping me all over the manual. I thought maybe TXiceman's formula might be the same thing my manual is trying to get at, more succinctly put. I suppose if I really got into it, I'd have ti use the GAWRs as well, which, oddly enough, my manual does give (3196 FRT, 3527 RR), for all the use it does me.

I believe the proper tool to do this calculation is located here:
