I am going to be towing my older Jeep Wrangler behind my DS motorhome and have seen many discussions about what to do with the transmission. Mine is a 5 speed with non locking hubs. I am clear the transfer case needs to be in neutral but I have seen discussion on what gear to put the transmission in. Some suggest 1st others 2nd and some say neutral is good. Anyone with real life experience towing a Wrangler with all four down? Is there a need to start the engine when putting transfer into neutral? Any problem with the non locking or automatic hubs I need to be aware of?

Once the transfer case is in neutral you can leave your jeep in park if you want as the transmission doesn't move at all. I have towed my Jeep with a tow truck about 300 k's and all we did was throw the transfer case into neutral.
My Jeep is a Grand Cherokee Laredo Limited with full time four wheel drive; automatic overdrive transmission with [4 HI-Neutral-2 Low] selections on the transfer case.
I start my engine and put transfer case in neutral and trans in first to make sure transfer case is really in neutral. If jeep does not move then I put trans in 4th gear. and stop engine and put ignition switch in first position to unlock steering wheel. Check and release parking brake.
When I had a Jeep and towed it I put the transfer case in neutral and then put it in 5th gear. The thought being if the transfer case somehow bounced out of neutral going down the highway at least itwouldn't over rev the engine.

Thanks to all for the responses. I guess the main thing is to put transfer case in neutral and the transmission in a gear. I don't have the manual for this jeep and can't locate one on line with out purchasing it.
