So, in my search for a used truck ( which will be my everyday driver plus pulling my 26ft. tt on short hauls in the summer for camping) I see some advertised as towing pkg. others just say trailer wiring or trailer hitch and some don't say anyhting but I see they have a hitch and wiring. So, how do I know if it's equiped for pulling a trailer?

Any good hitch co should tell you what you need based on the truck and TT. Electric brakes, size of hitch and wiring is standard for electric brake set up.

On GM products you can look in the glove compartment. There will be a sticker listing all of the options on the vehicle. Go to the various mfg web sites and get the codes for tow packages for your quick reference. Both Ford and Dodge will have similar data plates.

towing packages sometimes include more than a hitch and tlr light wireing. Those are the easy things to see or add

A real towing package may include a diffrent gear ratio in the axel more sutable to towing, a heavy duity alternator, larger radiator, extra transmission cooler, heaver springs and shocks, tlr brake controler is build into some of the newer trucks to add ABS to the tlr, just to name a few

good luck with your shopping

Each manufacture and car has it's own idea of what a towing packackage has in it. Part of that depends on what the vehichle already comes with. Things to look for include bigger brakes, transmission oil cooler, upgraded cooling for engine and power steering.
There is more and too much too mention.

If you take your VIN number to the dealers service manager, they will probably run your number for free and give you a printout of everything it means. I know for a GM truck the duramaxforum.com has a section where you can obtain this information by PM, don't know about any other brands and related websites.
