Towing Shackles???
On my 2500, the hitch receiver has places to each side of the ball that look like the perfect place to put your safety chains to... but the shape really doesn't let the chain hook fit completely, unless I come from the bottom, side.
When i connect from the bottom, side, the chains are a little tight and sometimes bind on my blue ox down bar.
Then it hit me, maybe what I need is some shackles on the receiver! Chains then go to shackles.
Good idea or bad idea?

I think the OP is asking about safety chain quick links. Yes, they can make connecting the safety chains more accessible. Just be sure to get ones with the needed capacity rating.

I can't imagine a receiver such that a quick link would not fit and instead a shackle would. Can you provide a picture?

Here's some photos. If I try to put my chains over from front to back, the clasp or whatever that spring loaded part is won't close.
If I come from the bottom outside to inside, they will close, but it tightens the chains up.
and on the left, the lock bar gets in the way regardless

i also hate the big receiver, requiring the sleeve that sizes down to my blue ox. what a pain... maybe I should just get a new hitch....

I would find a hook(s) that does fit the receiver, and attach it to the chain

You really need to connect thru the bottom and out the backside... don't go to the sides. I like the idea of bigger hooks maybe, but I would get rid of that hitch lock and use a regular hitch pin.
My 3500 has the class 5 hitch as well and I have no problem hooking safety chains to it on all my trailers...

I have the same thing on my truck. I am planning on replacing the hooks with something else. You can also get a 2.5" shank to get rid of the spacer adapter. It will take some of the "slop" out of the hitch.

It looks like you have the 2-1/2" adapter in backwards.
Get the correct 2-1/2" shank.
Get hooks that work.
