We currently own a 30FT Hornet and we pull it with our Toyota with no problems. We have ordered a 2012 Cougar High Country with is 2 foot longer then our current unit and 600 pounds heavier. Is anyone else using the Tundra to pull that size trailer.

Our Tundra is a 2011 (5.5 short bed) tow rating 9900 lbs, we have the factory tow package as well. Almost bought a 35' tt but just felt it was too long to back in and to move for weekend trips etc. Ended up with an Evergreen Everlite 30 rls 5th wheel, which is still being built, more to report on towing once we get it. The Tundras pull exceptionally more than std 1/2 ton truck and are great vehicles. I'm sure others on the site will provide addl help to your post.

My personal feeling is that even with the 30' trailer you are pushing the limits of the 1/2 ton chassis. Yes, you may be be well within the tow ratings, but there is more to towing than just the weight ratings. You have to have enough truck to physically control the trailer.

Another issue is if you are exceeding the trucks GVWR or rear axle GAWR with a loaded truck and the tongue weight of the trailer.

Personally, I'd want a 3/4 ton truck for a 30' trailer...but that is my opinion.

I have a 28' TT that I towed with a 3/4T before the Dually. The TT has a GVWR of 10.4K but actual weight of 9K. I felt that the 3/4T did OK except for a few occasions. Big trucks and Class A MHs would push some. I had a few stops that were close and a few times when I went into a corner a little fast, I could feel it pushing the back of the PU to the side (not enough to cause problem). Now with the Dually I don't feel any of them. I would NOT tow my TT with a 1/2T and prefer not use a 3/4T. I rarely get over 60 so speed is not an issue.

Check out the Toyota Tundra Forum, lots of great info that is specific to the Tunrdra posted by people who own them. There is alot of helpful info on towing and the truck's capacity. While I agree big 3/4 and whole number domestics can tow more there is also a need to balance driving a giant truck everyday against a smaller one that can also get the job done. There will come a day when we will be full timers, when that happens, I too will become a mbr of the diesel 1 ton club. Until then, I'll enjoy pulling into a campground and answering the question, u pull that with that? Happy camping to you all.
