I've pulled small boat and Coleman PUP trailers pretty much my whole life. I never heard of greasing the trailer ball till I got my TT. Seems it would make a real mess. What are your thoughts? Please chime in on both sides of the question.

When we had our TT, we greased the hitch ball. I hated the metal on metal grinding noise it made when not greased. Yes, it can be messy, especially if you brush up against it when you've unhooked at your site. A fast way to ruin a pair of pants. We just learned to give that ball a wide berth when it was out in the open.

Less wear on the hitch and ball, plastic, slide on covers, covers available, for the ball.
The higher the weights involved, and the longer the trip, the more important to keep everything operating smoothly.

Grease it definitely, less wear, less noise, but wipe off after unhooking, or put a paper cup over it to keep the jeans clean!

I grease mine as well. I use nitrile gloves when connecting to the sewer or dumping at the campground. So I take one from the box and place it on the ball. Keeps from ruining my shorts and keeps the kids from getting greasy hands....😊

Reese makes a teflon lubricant, it doesn't make the mess that grease does it actually white in color. It works for me.

I just use whatever old grease I have laying around... It's messy, but you get used to it.

There is a lot of bearing stress on the ball and coupler, especially if using a weight distribution hitch. You will eventually wear the ball and coupler if you don't lubricate that joint. The ball is easy to replace, but the coupler socket is not.
