Trailer brake controller shows sort circuit

Hello, my first time doing a post and I am hoping someone has run in to this issue and figured out the fix.

Issue: I have a 14' box trailer that I have always towed with my truck which has a integrated brake controller(Chevrolet Duramax 2500hd) no problems with this setup. Recently purchased a 2004 Itasca Meridian, hooked up the trailer and everything is fine until I turn on the lights. It instantly blows the dash light fuse, but all the trailer lights still work fine, although the controller shows "sc" I assume this means short circuit.

I have pulled the trailer harness connector apart and everything looks good.

I suspect the brake wires that go through the axles have shorted out. I had it happen twice. I replaced those wires and zip tied them to the back side of the axle.
After I disconnected the old wires, I pulled them out of the axle and found the short.

Thanks again, but that raises another question. With no trailer connected the problem doesn't exist, would that be the case if there was a short at the axle with the wire harness?

Without the trailer connected, you will not have the problem. The short in the axle has been disconnected from the tow vehicle.
The brake wires run through the axles from one side to the other to activate the brakes on the other side. The wire rubs the insulation off in the axle tube.

What is the best way to access this area? Are they exposed? So I need to take the rear wheels off to access?

No need to take the wheels off. Behind the wheels under the trailer, you will find 2 wires that are spliced together on the drivers side. one set of these wires goes into and through the axle. You will find them exiting the axle on the passenger side and spliced to the other backing plate.

Thank you so much, found a broken wire on the passenger side of the trailer. Repaired it and the problem is gone.
