Truck Scales

Does anybody know about when you get into the category of a Ford F-450 or Ram 4500 and 19,000 to 20,000 pound 5th Wheel whether or not they are required to stop at truck scales and the cost involved?

Yep, for commercial users only. RV's are exempt in most states although I have heard of some requiring all RV's to stop at times.

I have seen some states that had signage directing that "All Vehicles With Trailers" had to go through the weigh station. They usually wave the RV'ers and anything that looks non commercial right on through the empty truck lane.

What states?

I have driven my 5er out west to Wyoming and back east to Maine and as far down south to Georgia and never ever been in a highway weigh station. Last year I was on I90 in Wisconsin approaching a weigh station in the right hand lane (this is we’re I usually tow) a sign did light up say do not enter weigh station. First time I have ever seen this on the roadway.

We towed back east to Maine and we went through NY on I86; at the first rest stop there was a sign stating that all trucks must enter the scales. Will this was a planed stop for us so I entered the rest area to get out and walk around. Will a trooper came over and asked if I was commercial or not since I did not have a placard on the truck. I said no and he said to have a good day and enjoy NY with that he left. I did notice that it seems to me that the weight stations in some areas of NY are rolling operations since this was an actual rest stop.

Been running at 27500 gross for over 7 years and never stopped at a scales nor been stopped.
You can ask 10 troopers and get 10 different answers, if you want to pursue whether or not to stop. I have been told I need a non-commercial CDL because of the gross, but have not done anything about it.
