Even my 2-door Jeep came OE with 255/75 17 LT tires, but if P tires are all you need, carry on

Do you want a truck for ride or do you want to use it as a truck?
I have a truck and it has Lt tires.
My two cars have P tires.
What am I missing?

what you are missing is that most of the new pickups come with P tires..sure you can swap them out but that is an expense. my 2017 gmc 1500 4x4 came with P 20's all terrain tires. I have been following this thread about changing to LTs for a better feel when towing but as some say to swap out, seems like just as many say not enough improvement to justify the cost. mine will take 51# so I plan to just air them up more when towing and see how that goes before I pull off a set of tires with 4000 miles and splurge on some new ones..

Imho, I dont think the critical issue with P tires is load capacity as some have pointed out they are just as much as LT tires at similar psi. What is important when towing/loaded to the max is “toughness” or “reserve/resilience”. I would prefer the peace of mind of extra belts or plys and stiffer sidewalls for those unforeseen conditions that can bite you in the a**.

All tires regardless of P or LT have a load index number. You can find a P tire with a high load index that has the weight capacity of a LT. What ever tire that came OEM should be able to handle the rating of the truck but not all tires are created equal.

A lot of Light Trucks will come standard with LT 'E' rated tires.

If moving from 'P' rated to 'LT' E rated tires you might notice a slight additional roughness in ride because 'P' rated will have softer sidewalls then LT 'E' rated.
In the old days what you say was true but new tires do not necessarily have more plies for each grade as they did back then. The components are heavier and more capable but you do see an extra belt or other reinforcement as needed.
