Trying to find the best truck for towing

We were really considering an RV Hauler but it seems just too much for us. So now we are trying to find a good powerful dually. The fifth wheel we are looking at is a Momentum 349M. In the brochure it says:

UVW 13,500 lbs.
hitch weight 2,295 lbs.
GVWR 16,500 lbs.
length 38' 11"
Height 13' 5"
Axel rating 2x7,000 lbs.
water (gal.) Fresh 117-157 gray 104, waste 52

So, in order to pull this size fifth wheel, what can we consider? All the trucks we've looked at so far do not have the towing capacity, it seems, that is required. We have been looking at Chevy and Dodge 3500 and RAM 3500. We want a dually with 4 x 4, diesel engine. Any suggestions?

The 3500's or f350 Sally's should handle that easily. Are you sure you are looking at the correct specs on the towing vehicles?

The GVWR at 16,500 is one of the key numbers , but be aware that when loaded that 5er's hitch weight could easily run to 3,000 lbs.+ or 20% of the total.

You need to look at trucks with the correct payload and JMHO. That should be 4,000 lbs. +
Have you looked at the Ford f-450 ?

Hmmm, a 1 ton heavy duty with diesel engine and dual rear wheels won't tow it ????

RAM 3500 (D/W - 8' bed 4.10 axle, diesel, 4x4 crew cab)
shows a max 30,000 lb trailer weight... with a max payload of 5,600 lbs.

Surely that would handle a 16,500lb trailer with 4,000 lbs of pin weight!

Finding that 3500 on the lot could prove difficult. That spec is the max possible but not all will have that payload.

Well, my husband had the website up and was looking at it. We are pretty new to the towing scene. So, we might have read things wrong :-)

Well, that's what we thought :-) I guess we aren't reading things correctly. Pretty new to this business. We will learn as we go...I hope!

the 2017 ram 3500 dwd with cummins + aisin should have no troubles for that 5w.

I think that spec is common... but I think the "MAX SPEC" may be hard to find !

Max spec is to tow up to 31,210 Pounds and Haul up to 7,390 Pounds

That's 3-1/2 tons of payload !

Any of the big 3 truck MFG's dually's will tow that TH easily. Even the lowest rated DRW 3500 diesel can handle it fine. I guaranty there's many that are towing the same size with an SRW 3500/350.

Looking for the right truck...

My bumper pull TT:
Dry Weight: 8,833 lbs.
Payload Capacity: 2,547 lbs.
Hitch Weight: 980 lbs.

Was thinking about an F250 But would like to see how everybody would spec it out. I.e.: tow package, larger alternator, engine, transmission, etc...

Need to probably look at something a few years used.

Thanks!!

A dually for sure is the only way to go, much safer for towing imo. You can get a 450 but you don't need it. I'd figure 25% of GVWR just to be sure, some are heavier. My fifth-wheel is 18k gvwr and the pin weight is 3900! My '15 f350 2wd has a payload of 5,650, (ccc, yellow sticker on door post) , gvwr of 14k and tows great! As someone else said, get at least 4K of payload and you'll have plenty of truck.
Good luck!
