What does this button do

I have been told several different things about the tow button on the gear shift knob on my suburban.

These include : always have it engaged when towing.

Only use it when going up/down hills.

Don't need it.

It regulates your speed going down steep hills (engine brake)
and since mine doesn't it is broken

SOOOO what is the definitive answer?

It's my experience that the truck won't jump into overdrive or higher gears so quickly when towing. That means your truck's engine will rev at higher rpms where some of the higher torque and horsepower limits are found in most motors. It also means lower miles per gallon. Here's an answer from howstuffworks.com...

"The tow/haul mode changes a vehicle's transmission shift patterns. Pulling a heavy load requires a lot of power. The tow/haul mode reduces shift cycles. Depending on the truck, it may also boost torque and engage an engine braking mode to help drivers maintain control while driving up and down hills."

In my truck the shift points change and grade braking is way more sensitive. It also downshifts when slowing. 2015 silverado 2500hd with the gas engine.

Tow/haul mode extends the RPM in each gear.....shifts to next higher gear at higher RPM so more work is done in each gear

Should downshift when you apply service brakes

I always have tow/haul ON when towing
I sometimes turn tow/haul on when not towing......depends on traffic flow. Stop and Go and Slower moving traffic so transmission doesn't upshift/down shift---stays in one gear

And with a 4 speed auto (3 speed with Overdrive) it stays out of OD

As stated above , and typically raises the control pressure to firm up shifts. This allows less slippage on shifts , which in turn helps with fluid temp and wear on tranny soft parts.

On the 90's model Chevrolet trucks if you towed in overdrive without the tow haul mode engaged the transmission life would be shortened dramatically. Newer models it affects grade braking engagement and shift points.
