97 had only 2 options, that I recall 3.54 & 4.10.
3.54 works for lighter towing but the closer you get to Max. GCVW the more you need the 4.10
Trailer over 10,000lbs, 4.10

what rear end gear do you use in a newer truck than 1997 dodge. I am thinking about trading my truck for a new one . Some of the trucks come with 373
gear and some you can get the 410.I would like to know which is the best gear to run in a350 or3500.
thank you,
t.l.t.

3.73 will work well for most people. My dually came with 4.10 and it does very well towing my 13,500 fiver. I have gotten as good as 18.6 non towing and 11.6 towing so why change?

What does have now? I had a '96, 3/4T CTD and changed the differential gears from 3:73 to 4:10. The engine always sounded like it was over-speeding, didn't have the same pep when empty, less fuel mileage, and had a low-pitched exhaust drone at 65MPH and above. You may use this calculator to determine if you really want to change to a higher ratio gear-set.

The 10% change in the gear numbers 3.73>4.10 , adds 10% to your RPM at cruising speed, with a possible drop in fuel ecconomy. The real advantage is in the start up from stop, easier on the trans/clutch, and holding a higher speed climbing a hill, with the added torque multiplcation, and added hold back coming down hills.
Some trucks list a lower trailer weigh tow rating, for the 3.54/3.73 than the 4.10, something the salesman won't tell you ,paticularly if they don't have a truck with the 4.10 in stock, they are more interested in selling you what they have, rather that what you need.

Depends on several factors: Engine, tranny, axle ratio, and the weight of the trailer. I don't know beans about a Dodge, so I'll give you the Ford numbers for a new dually.

For F-350 DRW with diesel engine, only 3.73 axle ratio is available. That gives you a GCWR of 30,000 pounds, or the ability to tow a trailer that grosses up to about 20,000 pounds.

If 20k towing capability is not quite enough, then you can go for the F-450 diesel pickup, which has a 4.30 axle ratio and a GCWR of 33,000 pounds, or a max trailer weight around 23,000 pounds.

With the 6.2l gas engine, You can choose 3.73 or 4.30 axle ratio. 3.73 gives you GCWR of 19,500 or a realistic max trailer weight of about 10,000 pounds. 4.30 gives you a GCWR of 22,500 pounds or a realistic max trailer weight of about 13,000.
