I agree, even though I'm on my second Ford Superduty in 4 years I think all 3 brands are great trucks. I'd go out with your wife and look at all 3, drive them all, and decide. I'd definitely say Ford and RAM are the most popular in the diesels right now but I'm sure GMC is great also, they look great for sure in my opinion. It seems Ford and RAM are discounted similar, both around $12,000 off sticker.

The odd thing (in a good way) to me is I have yet to really hear anyone complain on any of the RV forums about their newer diesel trucks which says a lot about all three brands. It's a competitive market and the new diesel trucks are pretty incredible to me.

What truck to Purchase?

Hi again, Been truck shopping! wow! lots of choices, cant afford a new unit so looking at used. most of them have lots of miles! how many miles is to many miles or does it matter? Been told not to worry about mileage on diesels as long as they have been taken care of! Leaning toward a 2008 Ram 2500 that has 127,148 miles, no luck finding a 3500. What does everyone think? Anyone with a 2008 ram 2500 diesel and how many miles on your unit? Thanks.

ram 2500

Those trucks are rock solid, we had one and liked it a lot. The only issues those trucks have are with their front ends, bearings, tie rod ends, etc. I would have an independent check that and you should be good to go. Low mileage used are hard to find. Good Luck

If the truck has been deleted make sure that you get the programmer with the truck that was used to modify the ECM. Otherwise you will be in trouble down the road if you need to work on the engine ECM.

You don't need a diesel for those GVWRs. Any newer gasser HD truck would be fine. Why spend the extra $$$ for the diesel and get an older higher mileage truck, when you can get a newer lower mileage gasser. JMO but look for a GM 6.0 gas 3/4 ton. Plenty of truck and the 6.0 gas motor is rock solid. Less in repairs. Just because the diesels run longer doesn't mean they don't have issues. Plus buying something with 120,000+ miles on it means the drivetrain and suspension is more prone to needing repairs. A gasser with 70,000 miles or less will have far less wear n tear on it.
Here's a couple examples.

My opinion is that I would prefer buying a used diesel then a new gas. A 70k gas has nothing HD in the drive train and will wear out far before a 200k diesel HD truck.

I would stay away from the Deralax motor, that is a joint venture motor designed and built by Exlax and Yugo. Only buy GM trucks that have the Duramax engine, an Isuzu design that is currently wholly manufactured in Moraine, Ohio USA. And, yes, DEFINITELY avoid the Furd 6.0, it's problems are legendary unless you "bullet proof" it by deleting the emissions equipment.

IMO all three companies make a good truck, i would be interested to hear/read peoples likes or dislikes. You know the stuff you can't determine on a 10 min test drive.

I have 2014 RAM 2500 CTD
Top Likes
1. exhaust brake
2. interior/exterior design
3. DEF gauge
4. drive train is stout
5. tow mirrors
6. fancy stuff (heated SW, u-connect, WIFI, keyless entry)
Top Dislikes
1. DEF tank small
2. AC/heat to rear is disappointing
3. doors don't hold when push open
4. truck is ridiculously high, looks great but PINA to use
5. sort distances (~7,000 miles) between fuel filter change warnings
6. have tried 3 ram dealers for service and haven't been impressed with any of them (one got busted recently for a tech taking cust car on 96mph ride in the residential streets)

What about payload? There's a huge jump between the 2500 ram and the 3500 ram. What's the hitch weight of your new trailer? Does your weight dust hitch half it? How much do you and do weigh? What else are you gonna shove in the back.

The ram 2500 "should" net you around 1900 lbs? Hitch weight eats 400? 500? 700?
Then most normal couples between the two add 350 to 400 lbs. may not be important to you but so far unmentioned in this post.

Add in weight of all four dogs and anything in the bed.

The sticker in the door will tell you all that.

I would have to agree here: Brother is on his 3rd Ram now (2008 3500 diesel) and pulls a 5er. Just about every suspension item has been replaced. Also rear end, steering box and now the turbo just went about 3 months ago.

But he is a die-hard Dodge Man. Has a Viper too....That one he babies....

Since I don't pull that big of a RV (26' tt) and I don't think I'll get anything over 30' in the future, my Tundra will do just fine. Going up to Alaska next year so I wanted the most reliable vehicle out there.

I have come to the conclusion that a huge percentage of those towing are overloading their trucks. If you have a 5th wheel that has a GVWR over 18K you're likely overweight even on a F350, F450 or Ram 3500. It's not that they're over the towing capacity but they are over on the pin weight.

I've run the numbers through one of the online programs and I find it's just so easy to go over.

When same thing with TT although I don't think as many go over as do the 5ers since they usually don't weight near as much as a 5er does.

Our 07.5 36SB3 Mobile Suites weighed 20K and had just over 5K pin. Full time for 3.5 years. You add way more weight than you think!
