Need help

New member, I have a mid size suv, 2016 nissan pathfinder, tow rating 5000lbs. Looking at a small expandable or pop up camper, do not want to get to much for the vehicle, are trailer brakes needed and sway control. Thanks in advance for any and all info.

YES and Yes. Pathfinder has a relatively short wheel base. Even a smaller TT will require trailer brakes and will benefit greatly from a weight distribution and sway control hitch set up. Don't skimp on either of these two pieces.
Have fun and travel safe

Ditto 5dcanonman

You'll need a brake controller and a weight distribution hitch.

Your next decision will be if you want a tent style popup, an A Frame or a light weight conventional trailer. Each has its own advantages. If you want to accommodate lots of people, the tent style will provide you with the most space. If it's just two of you or maybe a family with one or two pre teens an A Frame or light weight will probably be O.K. If you're tall you need to consider whether you'll be comfortable in a shorter camper. I was surprised when I first stood in an A Frame - I'm 6'-6" - because I can comfortably stand up except at the very ends, which is where the bed and dinette are so I don't need to. I did, however buy a Rockwood high wall model for the higher (normal counter height) counters.

Finally, all other things being equal, the lower profile of a popup or A Frame do make towing much easier when compared to a light weight conventional trailer.
