I've seen a couple really nice hybrids that not only have the beds on each end, but also one that folds down from the side. My husband brought up something that I thought I'd ask you folks: Do any of you who have this type floorplan find that you've been unable to fold out that "side" bed because of room in a campsite?

We have a KZ Sportsman Toy Hauler with side fold out bunks. It is not a standard option, KZ did this special order. We have not had any problems at campsites. The tent on the passenger side gets in the way sometimes, and if it is a real pain we just fold it in during the day.

I have seen models with the side fold out bed directly over the dump valves. That in itself does not seem to be a problem, but the fact that the sewer connection must be nearby is. Maybe it's just me, but I don't want my kids or myself, to be sleeping that close to the sewer opening. Passenger side seems to be a better location, even if it does get in the way.

It's sometimes a limiting factor in heavily treed lots, where you need room on both sides for the canopy & fold-out, but I imagine some slide-outs create similar issues. Having the bed over the dump valve should not be an issue if you do things right & avoid spills, but you may whack your noggin a few times when dumping.
