Traveling with propane on?

If it weren't for bad luck I would have no luck at all.

I fill the ice chest with the food, and ice; when we get to where we are going we stop at a market get the rest of the supplies. and 2 bags of ice.
When we get to the camp site. I start the refrigerator. If it don't light we have the ice in the ice chest.
Have never traveled with the propane on. As a matter of fact I usually check to see that it's turned off. There have been times when we got home in the late evening and turned the refrigerator on and came back the next day to unload the rig.

I just took delivery of my camper this past Saturday. The guy that gave us the walk through/demo of the camper told us to run the frig on gas for a while before leaving the house. Then turn it over to electric while we travel. He said that the frig cools quicker and cooler in the gas mode.

I hope I didn't hear it all wrong, but that is what we intend on doing. I'm sure someone will let me know if I, or the guy, got it wrong.

We run ours over night on ele and turn it off during travel if going an hr or two. For longer trips we turn on the lp. There is no option to run on ele while traveling that I know of, its either off or on lp. Also they cool from the freezer down so we always put a bag of ice in the freezer to help it cool. Have fun!

Did he tell you that to run it on electric while traveling.
It would be necessary to run the generator when traveling?

Or does the demo guy even own a RV?
Or he may meant when at campgrounds with electric hook up. Run it on electric.

I don't know. I may not have heard him correctly, it is probably my misunderstanding. This is my first camper with all the comforts of home. I've got a lot to figure out.

The more I think of it, he may have said to get the frig cooled using gas instead of using the electric from the home or storage place.

I didn't read this whole thing, but if you don't want to run with propane, how about the generator...or just like someone else suggested, leave it off.

If you run it off your batteries and continue to do so while stopped, the fridge can use up your batteries pretty fast...
Most of us with propane/electric fridges run them off propane except when hooked to shorepower.
It's a good idea to turn the flame off when gassing up at the service station, but there aren't any safety concerns other than that.

I thought about this with my class A and never turned it out, but I only travel 4 to 5 hours at a time and no one opens the ref. I'm starting to think it may be better on the igniter by causing less wear and tare. (Made since to me).

All RV refrigerators have wind shields around the burner. All ref. are designed to be used on gas underway. The burner will not blow out and keep relighting. Older boards will relight one time and then lockout. Newer boards will relight three times and then lockout.

Thousands of people do this every day and when was the last time you heard of an RV catching fire underway due to a refrigerator malfunction, or sending a gas station up in a mushroom cloud? That fact alone should pretty much end the debate (although of course it won't... )

I think you will find most travel with the propane on with trailers. We have been RVing since 1984 and never had an issue with the propane operating.

I want my ice cream frozen and beer cold when I arrive.

You will find that more people have a bad reaction to food poisoning than RV frigs blowing up.

Also, the Texas summer heat will heat one up in short order in the summer.

The only problem I had with running with the propane on was when there were gusty winds that blew out the pilot light. Beer went into the freezer while I unloaded the toy hauling 5er.

Same here but only since 1957 so I have a few years experience too.

The propane system in an RV is designed, built tested and certified to be left on while in motion.
Do propane powered vehicles turn the propane off while moving? Do you turn the gasoline off while driving? You should worry more about gasoline explosions than propane.

My camper (he said camper, like in pickup truck camper) and my 22ft Lazydaze class c had 3-way fridges. 110v, propane, 12v.

The salesman likely meant to run it on 12v while under way, then switch to propane at campground, unless you hook up to shore power, then it automatically goes to 110v.
