Dutchmen Voltage 3970
Bought a TT 2 years ago, now looking at a 5th Wheeler Toy'r... Anyone have the Voltage 39xx? I'm 6'7" 260 LBs, so kinda big and like the big bath room in the Toy'rs plus the king bed. Don't have any "toys" yet but with 2 young boys that could change in the future. So 3 AC's, will it keep cool having no shade when its 95 outside? Our current TT with 2 ACs does not work well unless in full shade when its 95 outside. Just wondering how the toy'ers handle the hot or cold weathers, mostly hot down in the southern US.
Old truck is gone, now a RAM dually sits in the driveway, so thinking i have plenty of truck now to pull a 5th wheel Toy'r
If anyone knows anything about the Voltage I would like to hear your thoughts when you get a chance. Is the "EPIC" Voltage vs. non-EPIC worth the extra $$
Anything else to watch out for? Thanks for your time and opinions... JWB

We looked at the Voltage in our hunt for the unit that was right for us, but ended up going with Grand Design's Momentum. I would really recommend comparing the R-value of the insulation when wondering whether it will be comfortable in hot temperatures. We have the "weather-tek" package and is fine in 95 degree temps even in the garage/bunk area.

We have just really started our search for a large toy hauler as well.
Overall they are not bad, but after looking at several other units I walk away from the Voltage feeling not impressed. I am not sure exactly what is causing that though.
I think part of it is what most units in that style suffer from and that is the living room lay out. Basically when you are in your main living area, you are staring at your kitchen.
If I am out enjoying the country, I want my main living to sit where I have great outside views.
Of all the units I have been able to see in person, the Grand Design are my favorite.

I just posted a lengthy response on another thread about the 2012 Voltage we just moved out of, it was a pile of crap in so many ways, constantly falling apart, I could never recommend one.
There were many things I really liked about it as well but I would recommend the Solitude or whatever Grand Design it is called though still going to have the regular new RV issues and might not handle really cold weather, etc...

If you are not sure of the weight that Ram rated your truck to pull, look up the Ram Tow Chart for your year of truck. The 2016 Ram DRW trucks were rated to tow anywhere from less than 13k to over 31k depending on the configuration. If you don't know all the info listed in the tow charts, you might be able to give the VIN to a dealer and they can tell you. The RV salesman will say "Oh, you have a dually? You can pull anything on our lot." Which is not necessarily true.

I'm (only) 6-4 and shopped more than a year just to find a rig that fit me, or at least the best considering I also had my wifey's list, and most importantly my toy needs (lol).
We looked, studied and on-site white glove tested at all the Voltages, Venoms, Sismec's, Fuzions, Road Warriors, Grand Momentum's... dang, even many more that have left my mind now. Anywho, some are just built more for bigger people. When I say bigger, I'm thinking my 6-4 was about their max in mind b/c that was a challenge in a half! Most TH'ers are designed by English folk (maybe not real tall one's either!) and built by the Amish clan out in Indiana. Space or volume inside is in high demand. Not sure many Mfgrs "bow" (pun intended!) to us taller guys.
Doorways of course, but standing in the shower was a big test. Most of the THers my head was UP IN the skylight dome. Did not like that feeling, those models got an immediate nix from me, wifey's decision was over-ruled at that point.
You at 6-7 will have a huge chore finding comfort.. as you already know. I feel sorry for you in a way, but I think you know sacrifice is forthcoming. How much is where it comes into flipping back and forth (about a million times).
Man, I wish you luck finding that almost perfect RV. Just venture to all the shows and the Internet will help you find dealers with models of interest so you can go live and preview!

I feel for you being so tall, I am 5'8" and the Voltage shower was OK but my even shorter wife that has really long arms felt really cramped. I have a buddy that is around your height and 350 lbs and not really overweight, just huge, he gave up on finding a toyhauler he could live in full time.
Something to consider, take a look at used units to save a ton of money and install a bigger shower or bathtub if enough room. I was going to put a 54" tub in the Voltage by eliminating the TV and little pretty useless sized cabinets around it and could of dropped it down as right over the cargo bay, gave up a bit of storage but it could be done without that much effort, at least to me but I have always liked a challenge and modded everything I have touched all my life
Note: I removed the trim walls in the rear of the cargo bay to install a subwoofer, amp and surge suppressor and found they had wasted a ton of cargo space with sloppy placement of a few components. I moved the water pump, transfer switch, some plumbing, etc and gained 40% more space in just a few hours of work and still fit the large audiophile sub and the suppressor.

Clearing one thing up, I was going to remove the bedroom tv and cabinets, pocket door, add a 54" bathtub, it would of been a bit of a tight fit around one corner of the bed but worth it to us. It came with 4 TV's and we only used one occasionally as avid readers so ditching the one in the bedroom was no big deal to us.
I know someone with 4 children living in a pretty small 5th wheel that is looking into a tiny house and I recommended buying the best used toyhauler, biggest, etc and convert it instead. It would take 1/3rd the work and the cost could be as much as 1/3 of building a tiny house of anything near the size. The garage could be made into two bedrooms, one with elevator beds, add laundry room, etc..if a big garage that is like the 14' one we had.

We purchased the 2017 Voltage 4150 approx 9mths ago. First RV for us and with 2 adults, 2 Teenage girls and 3 dogs this floor plan served our needs best. I am 5'11" and find things to be OK in all aspects of the trailer. I didnt look at the GD but did research others like Raptor, Cyclone etc. we have the Epic package and opted for the full body paint. Been out 6 times and the hottest temps only reached mid 90's. The 3 AC had no trouble keeping RV cool. The two porch options give us extra sq footage for the dogs to hang out. Can get cramped should there be inclement weather. The side deck actually works well during a normal rain with awning out gives you a small outside deck to sit or cook on. We needed the extra bath / shower for the girls so it really reduces the cargo area for traditional toys. We knew that our cargo area would only be used to out a golf cart. Since this is our first RV my opinion on workmanship may not aliign with a more experieced traveler. Overall i have a good experience with the purchase and my expectations. Little things dealer has taken care of with no problem. Nothing major to date. The cargo area under the RV is small and has to be packed very thoughtful or you will quickly run out of space. I added a custome hitch to put a bike rack and then mounted 5 inch bump caster wheels to it for little extra dragging protection. Immediately traded in tires and put 14 Ply G rated tires. Huge difference with turning and gives me more comfort of reducing a blowout. I moved the under cargo ara walls and gained a much needed 18x33 inch additional floor space. Wiring behind the wall was quite scary looking. Lol. The steps used for both decks that allows entry from outside are a real pain and very heavy. No where to store except on the floor in the cargo area and it would be difficult if the golf cart was in there. Personally the steps havent made a single trip and cant say we have missed them or passionate about taking. Given that we really dont need the toy fuel tank center on the outside i could envision taking that tank down t save weight. Possible ble create a sewer storage area. With double heads the 2 black takes add more time to breakdown. I am anal about tank cleaning. These rigs are heavy....i am still intimidated about towing to keep bridge heights in mind, site lengths etc. this may be the simple fact its our first. I purchased a 2017 Ram 5500 for the TV. Did i mention these rigs are hewvy. Lol. I was overly concerned about stopping the weight vs towing. Make sure you are covered especially in the payload and rear axle weight rating. 20% hitch pin weight at full trailer GVWR puts it right st 3900 lbs. i went ahead and spent the extra $$ to put a Hensley TS3 air ride hitch on the truck. Couple thst with the Moryde hitch on RV really, really improves the towing itself. Very smooth vs what i have read on the non air bagged hitches. Drives you cost up but it was a non negotiable for us. If mama was going to ride in a truck for 6 hrs needed to have the best ride possible. We store the RV in an enclosed building so my hope is we should have very little UV damage to roof. I just ordered today a disc brake kit to give me that 40% better stopping power. Did i mention these rigs were heavy. Lol. Not sure i have been much help but that mentined has been my experience. Good luck with your cintinued search to an RV that fits your needs. DK

Beautiful rig! Toy haulers are heavy especially on the pin when you are running without "toys" in the garage.
