Cheri and I are thinking of upgrading from our Desert Fox 17 ft to a new McKenzie / Dune Chaser (Monaco). Its a 34Ck 5th wheel with a 10 ft garage. I know Monaco is a top name, but what about the Toy haulers?

Question 2..... Is there anything special we should know about having a 5th wheel?

Jim

I'm sure someone will be along to answer your questions shortly. I don't know anything about the brand but I can tell you that I'll bet when you hook up to a fifth wheel you'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier. The only time I've heard of someone not liking the combo is when the trailer and truck didn't match up well and there was a bucking/jerking problem, most of which can be corrected with pin weight. I have found that a triple axle will tow and ride so much better than a double axle that I would hate to own one that wasn't. I guess its what you get used to.

i'm not sure but did they (dodge) take anything out of the bed length to give the cab the extra room. i heard thats why i can't pull a 5er with my CC f-150. no expert here just a thought..

short bed equals no room between hitch and rear window. if i'm wrong please let me know.

Thanks Tom, The unit is a triple axel so I guess we got something right so far. The Ram should have no problem. I always think back as to the few times I remember seeing folks have a hard time backing a 5er. We are looking at the electric slide hitch and the few folks I talked to said it was a great choice.

Spooner , Thanks for the input, the Mega cab is on a long bed frame, and they extended the cab 2 ft. but the bed is 6'.

Jim,

You better get out your pencil, paper and calculator. There is a real good chance your Mega Cab has less than a 2200 pound payload. Minus the slider hitch, people, fuel etc and that doesn't leave much room for pin weight. Checking that model on rvwholesalers.com it shows a pin wt of 3110 pounds!! Looking at the Dodge site, It rates the towing capacity at 12500 - 12950 That 5ver is 11390 dry and 16950 GVW.

The max weight of the Dune Chaser is 16000, thats room for water 60 gals of gas and the other stuff, we would carry fuel for the generator (20) when we plan on using it, and we don't need gas for the wing, because I get it on the road when I need it the wing weighs around 1000 lbs and our stuff. Dry weight on the sticker is 10500, I figured 13 K , the truck says 14K we should be OK.

my trailer without water is 5500lbs a little more then half of the weight my truck should pull, if im right i believe i can pull 9000lbs
now ill say the truck pulls it fine, BUT... we go up past payson on 260 its a "biggg hill" and the truck bogs down to about 35mph, now i just think of goin to california the mountains there are not as steep... but much longer... and im only pulling a little over half the weight i couldnt see pulling a full load... and yes im getting a 250 just for going a long way and having hills

You may run out of GVWR on the truck with the pin weight of the trailer.
How many slides does it have?
