We bought a 2008 Forest River Sierra Sport 38 ft 5th wheel toy hauler a couple weeks ago. It's a couple hundred miles away, and we're going to pick it up tomorrow. When I was there, I forgot to look at the harness for the lights to see if what type of plug it is.
Are they a 7 pin, or 6 pin?
I also do not have a plug in the back of my truck yet, just the one under the bumper. Will the cable reach back there, or do I need to get an extension or put a plug in the bed? And where in the bed is the best spot for a 2010 F250?

Howdy and welcome to iRV2.

To answer your questions, I would say Yes its a 7 pin, it should have electric breaks and you will need a break controller. As far as the cable, mine is long enough to reach down to my bumper that's where I plug in at. If you never towed a 5th wheel before don't forget its not like a trailer and dose not follow in your tracks in a turn so make them wide. If the road has a right hand curve in it I stay to the left of my lane and in a left turn to the right of the curve. Have fun and take it easy until your used to it.

Thanks Jim. It does have electric brakes and my truck has the built in controller. It's good to know that it should reach the bumper so I don't have to mess with it when I get there. Thanks for the towing advice, I've only towed a 5th wheel one time before, but I've towed all kinds of other stuff, including double pivots (jets about 50ft long).

We picked it up today. Tows better than I could have imagined. My truck has high gears, so starting out is a little jerky, but once it gets going, I barely know it's back there until I hit the steep grade between Yuma and San Diego. You were spot on about the harness. I really see no reason to put a plug in the bed since the top of my gate has a big lip for the step, so the cord doesn't hit the paint.

Glad everything is working out, we don't take 8 to San Diego, I take I 10 route. I don't like that hill and we like the stops we make, a few miles longer less steep hills relaxing.
