Over length issues?

Hello - A qn for experienced travelers - given the length of truck (MDT or HDT) + TH, it's not difficult to get beyond the "legal" length of 65'. For those of you over length, have you been stopped or is it your experience this is not enforced? Thank you very much for your help!

You're going to get lots of replies, "I've driven XXXX miles over limit and never been stopped." Those comments are true, UNTIL you do something that draws attention to your condition and might even be a factor in that attention getting incident.

If you sideswipe another vehicle or obstacle making a turn that requires law enforcement attention, you may have a citation added to your damages, or perhaps be required to drop the extra length and return for it with a vehicle within state limits. The other driver or property owner could make it an issue in a lawsuit. You are increasing your liability in driving in that condition, be sure to have insurance that covers the extra risk.

Hmmmm, well....thank you very much. You've got me thinking! I want to carry a smart car (ideally behind the cab of an HDT) leaving room for my Harley in the garage, but I also tend to be a law abiding citizen:-). This is going to take some careful consideration...... Best regards!

Holy smoke - that IS a long thread with lots of long rigs!! As a newbie it sounds as though in most states (with the exception of CA) law enforcement largely looks the other way, which just feels peculiar to me. We will want to travel in CA, and the thought of disconnecting and finding a different tow vehicle is not appealing.....
