Propane supply regulator question

So I'm prepping my trailer for our annual trip to LHC, AZ next month, and my lady reminds me of our leaky propane tank.

The WalMart AmeriGas tank leaks out the regulator when fully open and the supply is switched to it. Switch to the other tank fully open and it supplies the trailer just fine no leaks out the regulator or anywhere else.

Is the AmeriGas over pressured? Or is something wrong on that side of the regulator?

Regulator, no way to "over-pressurize" the tanks due to the relief valve.

Thats what I was pretty sure of. Its been more than 10 years since I was certified to refill propane tanks. But it doesnt make sense to me why 1 tank leaks and the other doesn't. Both are Y in to the same regulator. If the reg was bad I would think both would leak.

Maybe the tank that doesn't leak is near empty ?
The pressure drops off, when near empty.
Pick each one up. A full tank holds 20 lbs of gas.

Exchange tanks hold 15 lbs, but that's a different story.

Besides, regulators shouldn't leak in any situation.

What that red arrow is pointing to is the VENT for the 2nd stage of the regulator.

IF it is leaking there it wouldn't matter which cylinder was in service (tanks are used in motorhomes)
Propane only comes out that vent when diaphragm is cracked/leaking (1st stage has one also ----- very small pin hole vent)

The other common place for leaks is the pigtail hose (from cylinder to regulator)

Get a Cavagna Auto Changeover Regulator and couple of new pigtail hoses (ASME GREEN nut)

RV's use two types of dual tank systems. I've seen both. One is a straight "T" (Likely with check valves) so you open one tank let it run dry, then close it and open the other

The other type, Which I THINK you have, you have a selector knob or paddle, Turn it one way and that tank is PRIMARY, if it runs dry the gauge shows RED and the other tank supplies, Turn it to the other tank and the gauge goes GREEN while you haul the empty off to be refilled, then when the other runs dry, turn back, and.. Never ending cycle...

If it is leaking AT THE REGULATOR. and only on one tank, The change over valve is defective and needs replacement.

What wa8yxm said is correct. the change over valve above the regulator is leaking if one side leaks and the other does not.
So you need a new change over regulator.

Auto changeover AND regulator are ONE unit.........

2nd stage of the 2 stage regulator is leaking.

I'd replace the hose of the leaking side first and then the regulator. but that said have you tried switching the tanks to see if the rent a tank leaks on the other side? Occasionally you can get a bad tank with a mis-formed valve or a leaky vent screw. Best thing is to put some dish soap in a spray bottle and see if you can spot the leak before making any changes. You will need a "manometer" to set the regulator if you replace it. It is one of those tools like a battery load tester, that should come with every RV. good luck!

Plan to switch the tanks for that test this coming weekend. If it is the same side with the other tank, ill just buy new pigtails and switch over regulator.
