Ramp Doors

Are they all created equally? I mean, my back is a ramp only but I've seen videos of people adding the cable etc to make a porch. Are they constructed differently to make it a ramp/porch combo? We have 3,000lb limit on our ramp

3000 lbs would be plenty of capacity for using it as a patio, as long as you aren't interested in trying to set a world record for setting how many people you can get on it! . Our new Toy Hauler is set up for a patio and if I remember correctly, the ramp capacity is 2500 lbs when used as a ramp and 1500 lbs when used as a patio. Probably the most difficult thing to overcome would be to make sure you have enough frame work (sturdy enough) to anchor the cables both on the trailer frame/wall and on the ramp gate.....and that the cables are of a proper size to hold the maximum weight being put on them....plus some reserve.

I would call the manufacturer, I asked FR when I had my 2014 27HFS they said I could as long as I didn't exceed my ramp capacity. I never did end up doing it, I traded in for a 5th wheel instead.

When used as a ramp the weight is supported by the hinges and the ground. When used as a patio the weight is supported by the hinges and the cables. I don't think the weight rating would be near as high when used as a patio vs as a ramp.

You could always attach support legs to the ramp when used as a patio. I would rather do that then rely on the cables for full support anyway.

The rear ramp on The Road Warrior can be used as a patio we use cables to level it after unloading. But the patio on the side uses a cable and a support leg as well. You could install legs as suggested by Mobilemike. We have seen several were they only use support legs to level the patios.
To get an ideal of how it is done I would suggest go to a local dealer that sells toy hauler with a side patio, like the Road Warrior 427, and take pics of the setup. Then you could get the parts you would need. I would use 2 set of legs on the rear near the end of the ramp, one on each side.
Some side patios are different our uses 1 leg and some uses 2 legs to support the patio.

If you do use it as a patio, you might want to double check the weight limit. My ramp is rated as 3,000 lbs, but only 1,500 lbs as a patio.
