Third AC Unit

We have started a deal on a Seismic 4113 with a local dealer. The TH won't be in till next week, but I got the options sheet. It shows only two AC unit, lacking the third in the garage.

Our first RV and I notice some have the three AC Units and some just have two. I figure we will at times be in areas that are 80 and 90 degrees.

Should the lack of a third AC unit be a deal breaker?

Most large trailers, 5th wheels and motorhomes have two AC units.
Usually a 15,000 btu in the living area and maybe a smaller one in the bedroom area 13,500 btu.

I live in Arizona and we survive with two and we have been in some very hot locations of 90 plus degrees.

You being in Michigan I say don't worry about the 3rd AC because with a 50 amp electrical service you are unable to run all 3 AC units the same time. It will trip a 50 amp.

So if you got two 15,000's would be nice but probably you will have a 15,000 and a 13,500 in your rig.

A 50 amp RV electrical service is actually 50 amps on each leg X 2 for a total of 100 amps. It will easly run three AC units and lots more.
A 30 amp RV electrical service is just 30 amps on one leg and will be difficult to run two AC units and the rest of the RV power requirements.

I would at least make sure it is wired for the third AC. Then you can add it at a later date if you need it.

Uh... not exactly. From an electrical engineering standpoint it's still a 50 Ampere circuit whether at 120v center tapped (split phase) or 240V.

I looked at the specifications of the Jayco Seismic 4113. It lists 2 15,000 BTU AC units. The third A/C in the garage is an option but apparently not one the dealer who is selling it decided to pay for it to be added.

Our rig is the same length, 3 15,000 BTU A/C are standard but ours isn’t a TH. We try not to run all three but if we do, we turn one off when using other stuff so as not to overload our electrical system. We also have to pay attention as to which A/C is wired to which leg. Honestly, I wish our kitchen area a/c was a fantastic fan instead.

I have owned 2 toy haulers over 40 feet. Both had 2 ACs, the first had living area/garage setup and the latest has the living/ master. Both were 15/13.5k. In Florida I feel both setups are adequate, but preferred the garage location for a couple reasons. First is noise level when sleeping was nicer with no unit up front. Secondly when using the porch the garage unit “knocked down” the heat from the 3 season doors better. On that thought overall 3 ACs would be better on hot days if any porches are deployed as that is the only time the 2 units struggle for us. Just something to consider.

I've a 42 foot TH with TWO ac's. PLEASE get a third unit. I will be adding one for the garage soon. When there's no shade in some of these camps you GOTS to have flexibility when it's hot. I have afternoon shade where I am now but between noon and 3:00 the living room is 80 degrees. I need a third unit.

Also depends on insulation package. We have 2 A/C's in our 40 foot and it's been to Florida in July, no shade, no problem.

Our system is ducted and the master feeds into the duct system too.

There are a/c vents in our garage area and it stays cool/comfortable, but we also have the four season package.

Really like our three units. Was not on my must have list when shopping, coach already had them. Will be on the must have list for any future coach.

Cools well in hottest temps - we've done many triple digit encounters.

Cools down very quickly by kicking on all three.

Redundancy in case one fails.

The lack of a 3rd AC turned out to be the deal breaker. I may have picked up the rig and added the third AC if the build quality had been good, but it wasn't.

Keep looking, you will find the right rig.

However, build quality in most RV’s is iffy. The majority of manufacturers are pushing rigs out the door as fast as they can. They want to take advantage of a boom. But a bust is always around the corner. It might not be soon but it’s inevitable.
