12 volt receptacle

I went on line to buy some 12 volt recertacles and it says it needs 1-3/4 inch access in the wall. All vintage trailers I've seen have 1-1/2 in. walls.
Any thoughts.

Thanks
Chuck

Mount it on the wall surface with an L bracket. Doesnt look pretty but you can put it in a hidden corner somewhere. Or make a small wooden case for it and mount the case on the wall. Ive also seen one where the body goes inside a cabinet and the receptacle hole is outside the cabinet. Depends on your configuration and in what area you would like it to be.

Buy from an RV parts supplier and they have outlets that don't require that much in-wall space. The round outlet part protrudes a little to reduce the amount of space required inside the wall. Here is an example.

All they do is put a spacer around the barrel so it doesn't go into the wall so far. Most of ours are that way except for the two in the dash.

That's true. But the parts for the DIYer to do that are not readily available. And the one I pictured is available right now from rvpartsoutlet.com for 2/$6.75. At that price it's not worth trying to make it yourself.

What do you mean they are not readily available, Every RV dealer I have ever visited had them in stock.. I suspect Whitney has them.. PPLmotor homes has them. General RV has them. I have two of them in my motor home plus two more "Deep" type plus two more that are mounted with a special "L" bracket (that came with them) plus one more the last 3 I got at the auto parts store or Radio Shack.

Very easy to find. Though the two "L"-bracketed if I really wanted to make 'em look good I'd build a box around them.. NOTE. you can get avery nice box for that at Radio Shack.

Read my post more carefully. I said "parts." The "spacer" that Mr_D referred to, which would be required for a DIYer to make his own shallow wall receptacle, is not readily available. Neither is the shortened retainer that is used on the back side of the plate. Where are all the RV dealers that have those in stock?

Yes, the ready-made, complete receptacles are available everywhere. Where did I say they're not? I pointed out that they are, and they're cheap.
