2019 Ram 1500 vs 2019 Chevy 1500 vs 2018 F-150

I am reading about the upcoming redesigned trucks. Right now I am leaning toward the 2019 Chevy 1500.

I like the extended wheelbase, the larger bed (actually wider). I will be towing a 6,000lb trailer.

The Ram with some sort of battery assist power will also be an interesting truck. I read that the interior is the best.

Ford, I have like Ford trucks since the 2011 revamp of the engines. Even now, I like the engines in the F-150's. I would lean toward the 3.5 eco-boost.

I am still 6 - 8 months until I will be looking to downsize from a great diesel dually Ford truck.

What 1/2 ton trucks do you guys like?

Interiors and exterior design is a matter of taste.
Ford's mechanicals are proven at this point but will look pretty dated compared to the other two.
GM's new truck is mostly body/frame updates with some updated mechanicals, less likely to have issues.
RAM is an all new design with a lot of complicated and unproven systems. If they've put the time and money into it they could be a great setup. But FCA doesn't have the best track record and I'm not sure I'd take the gamble on that truck until it's been out a while. Ram/Jeep keep FCA afloat (at least in the US), they need to keep the high profit margins on those trucks, which makes me leary that as typical with Chrysler products, they'll cut corners somewhere. (I'm putting on my flame suit now)

Personally I'd wait until the new trucks come out, they'll likely put pressure on Ford to put extra cash on the hood to keep them moving off the lots.
But if you have to have the newest/prettiest I'd probably stick with one of the GM trucks.

Hands down Ford for me. I feel that the newer F150's with the Max Tow and the 3.5 Eco is the best towing 1/2 ton right now. Unless GM ups the HP/TQ on the 5.3 then it's out. Ram is fine with the 5.7 but unless they up the CCC then no. It looks like they're moving in that direction thought time will tell.
My choice is a Crew Cab 6.5" bed.

My F-150, 3.5 Eco, Max Tow, HD Payload, 8' bed supercab works great for us towing our 25' Minnie. Drive's like a dream, pulls like a diesel, very happy with it for the past year and a half. Hasn't been completely trouble free with 3 recalls, but these are nuisance recalls, nothing mechanical so far. 2 for the drivers seat, and one for the door seal.

Mechanically truck has been perfect.

Chevy 6.2 with NHT package, it has tow mirrors, integrated brake controller, heavy rear axle, 3.73 rear end, over 2000lbs payload and gcvwr of up to 17500 lb


The truck has plenty of power and payload capacity to pull your run of the mill 27' to 28' BH 8000LB gross and under.

When not towing they get decent furl economy and not a bad daily driver.

2WD 2019 RAM 1500 will have a high CCC option. pretty good amount over 2k lbs if I recall correctly. I'll edit with a link if I can find one of the articles.

The vehicle combination with the most payload capacity, according to Ram's tow chart, is also a 4x2 Quad Cab model with the 6-foot 4-inch bed with the 3.6-liter Pentastar engine (we're assuming with or without the eTorque system) and 3.55:1 gears. That setup offers a 7,100-pound GVWR and 2,320 pounds of payload capacity.

I would not want to put 2300 pounds in a truck that weighed less than 5000 pounds no matter what the manufacturer said.

I've owned all big 3 trucks over the years and while all were good the least problems were from the Ram #1, Chev #2, Ford #3. Other than oil changes and a new set of tires my current truck has yet to need some sort of repair. When it comes time to consider a new truck I'll take a close look at all 3 again then decide.

Its your money, buy what you like, not what others like.

Ford 150's reg cabs have 3270 lbs with the 5.0 V8, 3230 lbs with the 3.5 V6. But who buys a reg cab for towing? I guess if you're single and cheap.

I have been a Chevy guy my hole life but am switching to a 1500 ram. Just sold my 03 2500hd and am burnt out on Chevy. I like the ram and can get a life time factory warranty for about $ 3200 with $100 deductible. That sold me.

For towing a travel trailer what matters is braking, steering & handling.

The “ratings” don’t mean much at all.

Rack & pinion steering eliminates those without.

Independent front suspension eliminates those without.

Where trailer stability is tied to vehicle is good, but the TUSON trailer mount piece is faster.

A Hensley design hitch is pretty well a requirement with a TV as poor, overall, as a pickup.

If one is a farmer, rancher or contractor with IRS applicable miles, it may suffice.

Other choices are better for the 80% of miles that are family transportation.

What gear MUST go in a pickup bed (is the only relevant question). And is it NECESSARY to camping?

TW is about one-quarter to “payload”. The rest is levered off the TV or onto the Steer Axle.

The rest of the “points” is tantamount to arguing over paint color.

I hear ya! Neither would I. Too light a pickup for my tastes. I prefer to overmatch my load rather than be rding a knife's edge. You can see the truck in my sig, lol.

Those sure are big numbers for a half-ton, but I have always felt like my Dad's f150's seemed more sturdy than others. Not a Ford fan myself, but they feel like solid trucks!

I'm towing 7700 lbs with my Ram 1500 Laramie Eco Diesel. Up and down the Adirondack Mountains with no problems. 22mpg around town, 30 mpg Hiway, 13 mpg towing. I love this truck, probably the best I've ever owned. (and I've owned a lot!)

Hey, thanks for that. Thinking my second "car" could be a half-ton RAM with ecodiesel some day soon.

Its really too bad RAM has been pretty cryptic about ecodisel availability with each new model year release the last couple of years. Can't even configure one on their site. Doesn't inspire confidence that they want to continue making them. Hopefully the other big two companies releasing small diesels will get RAM to go all in with ecodiesel and make me think I'm getting something that will be long supported! I guess we'll see...I want one pretty badly.
