AAV's in RV drain lines for sinks are installed AFTER the 'p' trap(s)
They allow air into drain line after 'p' traps when draining waste tanks
This prevents the water in 'p' traps from getting sucked out thereby keeping the vapor barrier intact.

The one pictured is the cheapest design and most frequently used.
The diaphragm that opens/closes is held in place with a 'tang' from center of diaphragm. Over time the 'tang' stretches and does not pull the diaphragm tightly closed. When that occurs odors from waste tank then has a means of entry into inside of RV.
Grey tanks stink! Body oils, sloughed skin, urine, greases/oils, food debris etc.
Some bathroom sinks drain to black tank...they stink also.

Better quality/design AAVs are available but not for $5/$6.
