Towing our Minnie 2017 2106FBS with our 2016 F150

I easily forget the trailer is back there. Perfect set up for us, we probably went overboard on the tow hitch. EAZ Lift...love that too...

The truck I am looking at is a 2016 Ford SuperCrew with the 3.5 EcoBoost engine. Truck is not what I would call loaded with all the bells and whistles but has what I believe to be all of the options to be a very good tow vehicle.

3.55 Electronic Lock RR axle
2000 lb. payload. (just the wife and I)
Max Trailer Tow Package
Brake Controller
36 Gal fuel tank($$$$$$)
Rear view camera

The best part of the whole thing, at least to me. The truck is priced at 30K. The only thing I may consider adding from the dealer are the running boards. Us old folks need all the help we can get getting into and out of vehicles.

Pappi
Pappi,
That's the exact truck we want. How/where did you find it for 30k?

Pappi,
I bought my Ram 2500 Mega Cab with Cummins diesel for the same price with 28k miles in it.
From a resale value standpoint alone, the diesel is a great choice. The 800lb-ft are just awesome.
It also has a 36 gallon tank which is really nice on those long trips. It's a real bladder buster!

The F150 should be a great truck to tow a Minnie, but do make sure it has the factory "max tow" package.

Scratch,

Found the truck on the internet as an internet deal. Found out today while finalizing the deal the the truck was supposed to be a fleet truck. Supposedly bought and paid for. Almost lost the truck due to that. With more checking, my salesman found out that the buyer backed out of the deal and the unit was put back into normal retail . Found this out after we had agreed upon the price, so they had no choice but to go with that.

TDI-Minnie,

As stated above the truck has the max tow package. The only part of the package that is missing is the pro back-up assist. I was told this was left out since the vehicle was special ordered by a company or government dept.

I dont want to start a discussion as to gas versus diesel. Just did not want the diesel or 250/2500 to avoid getting a larger trailer and this is our primary driver. Not saying they are not worth it, just did not want one.

Now all I have to do is finalize my trailer choice.

Speaking of trucks, I bought a 2017 RAM 1500 Lone Star Quad Cab 4x2 with a 5.7 Hemi today.

Thanks Pappi,
I've been pricing the F150 for some time now. Found other similar makes for less $$, but we're now focused entirely on the Ford. Originally wanted the 302 V8, but several friends advise to go Eco Boost based on torque, gas mileage etc. Thought maybe we could find a reasonably priced '15 model with the 3.55 rear and tow package, but they are scarce. Ford seems proud of that thing cause I can't bargain with it like I can the others. We'll remain patient until it happens. Best of luck to you in finding the trailer...

Bigbird65,

You are going to have to let us know how it works out for you. Thought about the Ram, but could not find one with the options I wanted at the price I wanted to pay.

Thanks a lot guys for the comments. We just got back from a 3 week vacation Monday. Pulled the Minnie 2600 miles + with the RAM V6. Absolutely no problems. I towed it about 60mph since we were in no hurry and I was babying the china bombs (never had any trouble with them). The 2101DS has been great but we decided we wanted a larger Minnie, probably a 2201DS. That requires more pull power (5.7 Hemi) than we had.

I registered with Truecar and started getting phone calls from dealers. As it turns out there are thousands of 2016 Crew Cab 1500s out there but a lot fewer Quad Cabs. I wanted the Quad Cab so I could keep the 6' 4" bed and not have a truck as long as the Crew Cab with the same bed. Got a call Tuesday from a dealer who had several Quad Cabs. Went there with a very strong resolve to "NOT BUY TODAY". After about 2 hours of haggling over trade in value and out the door cost I failed miserably. It happened to be just the truck I wanted loaded with bells and whistles. Sure like the large screen back up camera display. I did wind up with a good deal considering that it is a 2017. It is the Lone Star body style only sold in Texas. I always considered that I was a FORD man until I got that 2014 RAM. It is a super quality Mexican made truck. Now to get a camper shell for it.

I had the 2001 version of your Ram. Kept it 14 years. It was a great truck. I hope you get many years of trouble free enjoyment out of it.

Red face update

8 months now w/ the 2016 2455BHS w/ absolutely no problems. We camp in SP/COE only and are loving the Minnie (our 3rd TT) . Open Roads-Acworth did the prep and I had told Ronnie I didn't want a new trailer for depreceation and bugs. and he said HE would work all the bugs out before delivery. I told him I was goin to hold him to that, and he did. Bravo to Winnebago for putting one together right. Still haven't used outside kitchen to full potential, but DW loves her "bedroom" w/ top bunk removed. Happy Camping, guys.
