Hello Good People,

My wife and I have a small S-Corp business and I am in need of office space. I work as a self-employed Civil Engineer doing consultant work and some small constuction projects as a licensed contractor. Our 2000 34' Jayco and F-350 do not get used much. I am thinking of selling the truck and trailer to the S-Corp for business purposes and of course using it as a mobile office. Most of the time it will be in our side yard (with full hook-ups). I am looking into commercial insurance (fully deductable) for both and then there is the benefit of depreciation at tax time.

Has anyone ventured on a similar course?

What are your experiences- Any with the IRS?

Thanks in Advance

This sounds more like a question for your tax man than here on the web. Yes, lots of people work from their RV's. But the real question is, if the S-corp owns it and you want to use it for a weekend who pays or what is deducted? Better get a tax lawyer involved in this one.

Regarding weekend use: Actually that is somewhat easy to answer. One can only deduct expenses relating to the percentage of business use vs. personal use. If I use my company owned trailer (similar to a vehicle) for bonified business use the ENTIRE year- of course 100% of the expenses to maintain that trailer (insurance, repairs, maintenance, utility costs, phone, internet, space rental etc PLUS depreciation) are deductable as business expenses to the S-Corp. If I use that trailer for personal use, I must come up with a reasonable percentage of costs attributed to personal use. i.e. if I take the trailer on a 1-week vacation during that 52-week year, 1/52 (about 2%) of the annual costs to maintain that trailer cannot be considered for business use. I have also heard of some folks RENTING their company owned items back to themselves.

I know there is a lot of talent out there and surely I can not be the first one to attempt to discuss this kind of stuff on this fine Forum.

I thank you for your input.
