i just tested my element for ohms set at 20k and it gave me just under 5, what is the proper resistance for the element? does this test mean my element is good or bad?

5,000 ohms isn't good.
Set your meter to read a range of 10-12 ohms which is where the good element should be.

also with multimeter not showing any power to element with wall (electic water heater) switch on, this switch was accidentally flipped on with empty water tank, also can't get gas to fire up, any suggestions what to check? what happens if the gas switch is turned on with an empty water tank?
thanks again

The heating element will burn out within 10-15sec if the HW tank is empty.
For the gas side some will run the stove inside first to get LP in the line closer to the heater if it hasn't been run in a while. Does the gas side have electronic ignition and can you hear it sparking when trying to light ?
