The spring is what helps it retract, but some use gas shocks nestled within the arms. It does need to have a number of winds applied to it depending upon the awning manufacturer and length.
There is usually only a spring in the idler head end of an electric awning, the end opposite the motor head end.
Normally the spring would have a small number of winds applied to it when the awning is closed and it would further wind itself when the awning is extended under power in preparation for retracting.

Are you sure the spring is not broken? We had to replace a couple over the years in our manual awnings that had broken in half.
