I have the idea of constructing two or one large battery boxes to externally mount on subjects in TT tongue just behind the dual propane tanks. Anybody ever do that before?

The box came from Harbor Freight. The batts sit in plastic batt holders attached to the box. I had to fab bottom brackets to attach it to the tongue that elevated it over the WD stirrups. Also, had to move the propane bottle holder forward. Overall, it was a PITA but works well. YMMV!

The box currently holds 2 GC batts.

Not unless you are a mind reader but I’ll give you hints.

Pos:
The converter output wire is hooked directly to the top catastrophic (cat) fuse (top left red wire). Hotel services are then fed thru the horizontal resettable breaker to the red buss bar and beyond to the DC distro panel. The far side of the cat fuse is wired through the main power switch then to the pos batt terminal.

The solar circuit is separate and goes through the vertical resettable breaker then to, but bypassing, the main power switch. Yes, the solar controller already has both input and output breakers in the interior. Hooked to this bypass are the pos wires from the shunt and new electric tongue jack.

Neg:

All hotel services, converter, solar and ground are attached to the black buss bar then wired through the Trimetric shunt to the neg batt terminal.

Hope this helps.

BTW, all connections and terminals are coated with dialectic grease to forestall corrosion from batt vapors.

My wiring is similar to the DC side (middle & right side blue stuff except for the inverter) in the following link. I added a master DC power switch between the 400 amp (cat) fuse and the positive battery terminal.

Is the inverter/ charger ground a case ground only? Otherwise current can bypass the shunt.

I was referring to my battery box wiring pic above plus explanation. Disregard the inverter and the entire AC (left) side of the linked diagram. The right hand converter could be an optional charger/alternator/battery like this; recharging my boat battery via solar:

BendOr did a great job with his metal battery box and that is a secure way to go. I did it a little differently with this Noco commercial grade battery box off Amazon.com, item #HM484 for about $87 that will hold 2 6volt or 12volt batteries. While not as secure as BendOr's metal box, I do use a strong motorcycle cable and lock to slow the bad guys down should they look at mine to thieve. Have fun with this project!
