Excellent point

We call it ground, it is really the negative return. Either way it is the common return for everything. That is why most (all?) of us who have spent a lot of time troubleshooting system problems do not like seeing anything other than a current monitor shunt between the negative post and chassis connection. The reason is an iffy connection there will potentially create a problem in everything in the system. A solid return and an iffy supply is less likely to be an issue for most of the parallel loads involved.
