I'm not sure what you consider, "avoid steep grades, hairpin turns and rock slides" but I-26 to I-77, to Silverton, WV, then U.S. 33 to Columbus, OH, I-270 NE to U.S. 23 to Findley, OH, N on I-75 to Michigan.
If you don't want to spend so much time in the Appalachians, I-26 to Asheville, I-40 across the Smokies to Knoxville, I-75 N to Michigan.
Interstates don't have hairpin turns or steep grades, all less than 6% with few exceptions.
