To me, that pretty much explains why you might see ants in the mailbox. RR ties have a tendency to attract ants (and other critters). Our borough even has an ordinance prohibiting their use. My mailbox sits on a painted, ordinary piece of galvanized pipe. I put it in when we moved here in 1976. However, I'm on my third mailbox. The first two rusted out. Then I got smart and put in an aluminum one.

I make a mix of boric acid and karo syrup or some type of sweet jelly.Place where the ants travel.They bring it back to the nest and kills all.Do not make it over 10% .You don't want to kill the worker on the way home.
