Cleaning Skylights

We have two skylight in our T/T one in the Bathroom and another one in the Kitchen which is quite large. Has anyone had experience in cleaning, polishing this type skylight. I have washed them in a bleach and soap solution but there still appears to be a film on them. I was thinking about a good car wax. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

How about dirt between the lenses? Our 5er, bought used, has dirt in the shower skylight. Can I pull off the inside trim and get the bottom half of the skylight out?

I used some of the dicor roof cleaner and the hand washed with car wash soap. After that I used meguiars one step cleaner wax. Looks like brand new now.

When you get right down to it when a product says, (cleaner) it has a compound in it that is an abrasive. Pure waxes should not have any abrasive in them and should not be marked as a cleaner/wax. Abrasives come in many, many forms and I am not a chemical engineer but have a lot of experience waxing, cars, furniture etc. A one time toothpaste had diatoms, (curstaciens) in it to act as an abrasive but not any longer.
Any product that is designed to polish will have those types of compounds in them. This compound is very useful for polishing all types of scratches from furniture, plastic lens, automotive finishes etc. It's called rottenstone. It use to be available at your local hardware store but not anymore. I get it from Rockler. It is a very fine abrasive that I use almost weekly on various items. I use it with water. When I can buy a container of rottenstone for say $10 and I assure you that you will have it for 10 years or longer, and can use it that long I'll save a lot of $$$$$ instead of buying this and that for various uses.

When used to polish furniture finishes it will give you a glass like mirror finish.
You can also purchase Pumice from Rockler but it is a shade coarser than rottenstone.

TeJay. I have some Classic Car Wax that says it contains Jewelers rouge and Carbana wax. Guess I'll try it.

The plastic cleaner/polish works well. I still have a bit in an old bottle of helicopter bubble cleaner/polish that works very well on my skylights. Label is gone so do not know the brand.

Novus #2 is a fine scratch remover which should do the trick. Removes haziness from most plastics. 800 548 6872 for a local distributor. Other stuff like the white fine rubbing compound,a toothpaste with grit may also work. They also sell a headlight cleaning kit that may work. Hope this helps.
