Cold tolerance

Hi all,

I am a new travelling temp worker looking for my second assignment. I would like to go to a place just outside Allegheny National Forest, but the assignment would wrap up in December and I am concerned that it might be too cold.
I have a 2017 Wildcat 312rli with Technology package. It has R-52 insulation in the roof and floor and R-14 in the side walls, ducted/heated holding tanks and 30,000BTU furnace with heated underbelly and tanks. The average Hi/low temps for this area in December are 36/22.
Any thoughts on how this RV would do in this weather?

Fill fresh water tank during day time highs.......then disconnect hose/drain and stow
Use on-board pump
AND RV FURNACE supplemented y 1500W electric heater for area you are in.

Blankets. lap throws AND have a source for propane...you will need LOTS of it

We have stayed in VERY cold temps .....all good/roasty-toasty but need propane.

Good luck!

Also make skirting either with foam insulation, thin plywood or even just hay bales. Cutting down on the wind under the trailer will make a huge difference in how your tank heaters and insulated floors work.

I also have never heard of our 52 but then again. I live here in Pennsylvania you should be just fine if your sidewalls are r14. However making a skirt would be a great idea cutting down on wind definitely helps. I would use then why would with a styrofoam backing you could simply spray it on to adhere. I tried hay but that will draw animals such as mice trust me I know... Dusty

That was supposed to say use plywood with a styrofoam backing.

The key word there is average. It could also get much colder so be prepared for that.

  • R-52 Insulation in Roof, Floor, and Front Cap (*R-Values Calculated at 80°ambient temperature.)
  • Yep R-52, that's copied from the Forest Rivers web site.
  • Thanks for your suggestions, good to know I can manage if I need to.

You may want to reach out to http://www.irv2.com/forums/members/1bigmess-151696.html as he is full time in the Idaho Oil Fields. Below zero experiences.

Having insulated our circa 1852 house to R57 to R99 I had trouble understanding the claim of R-52 in such limited space of a trailer ceiling while researching our then choice of a new Travel Trailer. When I looked into this subject with a more discerning concern for facts and not marketing ploys, I was disappointed. The claim was at "80 degrees ambient" was a clue. They claim they're using space age foil that resists heat transfer, great for sunny southern climates. I did the math on how they arrived at that claim and felt uncomfortable with giving so much credence to a layer of foil. What the "R" value is at 10 degrees ambient temperature seemed a more important value. I look forward to hearing of your experiences with this winters temps and winds. Good Luck!

I'm interested to see how it holds up, but still I'm a bit concerned. The assignment wraps up the first week of Dec, so I should be out of there before it gets too cold.I don't understand the technology, and while it sounds impressive, I understand that manufacturers do tend to exaggerate.
I'm not planning to go into any sub zero areas any time soon, if ever, but I'll let ya know how it holds up.
Thanks for the input.
