Thank you everyone. All of the input is very much appreciated. How are the gas stations heading from NM to Pagosa Springs? Are they accommodating for a truck pulling 33 feet? So far I've only traveled in Texas so I've been able to fill up at Buccee's. Best gas station ever!

there are plenty of good stations between santa fe and pagosa, going north out of santa fe there are a cpl. big stations on the right and several in espanola. also a big station in chama in case you are cutting it close. when you first get to pagosa there is a station but the best ones for pulling a trailer thru are on the west side of town

With a gas engine find out from the manufacturer where peak torque is. i run mine + or - 200rpm of peak torque. Peak torque for my combination is 3,000 rpm. So ill run it 3,300 or so bottom of the grade and when the grade slows. It will pull the motor down to grunt ville. 2900-3000. It will loose the RPM but the speed from there it maintains well.

I will be heading to Pagosa springs next week pulling a trailer with 3 horses and a pile of camping gear on a elk hunting trip. Any mapping program will direct you from DFW up US287 to I40 to US285 to US84 which has proven to be the easiest route by far when towing a camper or anything over 5k.
Towing in the past has been a breeze with a power stroke but this year I'm towing with a 6.2 gasser with 3.73 gears in my f250 . I have found that looking out overdrive by limiting the transmission to not sift past 5th gear in conjunction with tow/haul enguaged makes for a effective towing setup.

Welp, we booked a spot at Pagosa Springs cabins and camping at Sportsman's Campground. Looks like we'll be taking 287 out of DFW to Amarillo, then take 87 to Raton Pass. We'll stay the night there, then take 25 to 160. I've had friends take that route, and they like it. Are the gas stations good going that way?

The most important thing to know when towing in the mountains is to know how to select YOUR gear for pulling. Keep your rpm's up going up hill. Know what your redline is and don't be afraid to wind up the engine. On the way down the grades, use either the gear you would go up or one lower. if your speed builds up, use the brake for a short period and then downshift to keep the speed from building again. Don;t be afraid to go down a grade in a low gear. If you are passing semis on the way down, SLOW DOWN.

If the 6.4 is like the 5.7 the "red line" is electronically limited to 5800 RPM. You shouldn't have to go anywhere near that.
