Cost vs MSRP?
Can anyone shed any light on what these things actually cost, vs MSRP?
The reason that I ask is that we are currently looking at a Jayco 238:
2014 Jay Flight Swift 238RB | Jayco, Inc.
MSRP on this trailer is $18,907.
According to the dealer we have chosen to work with, the sales price is $14673.46. That is "at cost" according to the salesman.
Does that sound like a true "at cost" price, or will he be making a couple thousand at least?
I'm ok with him making a profit, I mean it is a business... but I don't understand how they can sell trailers "at cost" and continue to survive, unless they base their sales on the after-sale service.
At another dealer, they are selling Keystone Firesides which have an MSRP of $18,918, for a mere $10,845. http://www.hwhrv.com/details.php?id=...SIDE-19RBBH-RV

The 2015s are on the way. If they have some new features on the new year product they won't sell the old ones on the lot. Its just like the car lot.
Find out what the changes are and deal on the 2014.

Some fifth wheels I know have a $20k range from cost to MSRP, but MSRP is rediculous. It's just so the dealer looks good when they price it low. For cheap bumper pulls, it's much less of a margin.

Been in retail my whole life, the only reason you sell something at cost (or below ) is that you want to get rid of it ( or should say, out of inventory).

I asked about that. And he said that the 2015's will be about 5% more expensive than the 2014's.
So he said where the 2014 may be $14,600, the 2015 would be about $15,300.
Right now there's only one more 2014 on the lot. I'm hoping it stays there until July 7th when we can put in our credit app in.

Cost vs MSRP?
We thought we got a great deal at about 25% off MSRP. But, a quick internet search for same make and model revealed that everyone had the same "sale" off the MSRP. I've heard 20-25% off MSRP is pretty standard. Just searched that model and saw two different dealers at $14,862

Tends to look that way doesn't it.
Except for that Fireside. When we first looked at it it was $13,999. A week later it was on sale for $12,400. Then the following week I found it at $11,800. And now its down to $10,400. And this is all at the same dealer, Holiday World in Houston.

My research has found the markup is approximately 35% from what the dealer pays.

With automobiles, there are times when the manufacturer will offer an incentive to the dealer to help them liquidate excess inventory. Under those circumstances, the dealer can sell at, or below "cost" and still make a profit.

I'm in neither the car business nor the RV business.... but I know that car dealers have an "invoice price" and "hold-back" that they get from the manufacturer. When I buy a truck, I get "affiliate pricing", which is 1% below invoice, plus I get any current incentives knocked off, too. The only place I can haggle is on my trade-in value. The dealer still makes a profit because the manufacturing company does this deal and the dealer still gets the hold back payment.
That 35% markup may sound a bit crazy, but I believe it. My last TT listed for $34K+ and I got it for $25K drive-out... and thought I did OK... only to see that trailer go for $20K from another dealer. My next one will probably have an MSRP of $40K or so and I'll go in offering $25K... and see where we go...

Just remember, not all dealers are this way. Some small dealers, don't have a lot of markup in the first place. So dropping $15k of their listed price won't work.

Between the 2 units the Jayco has more features in it. It has the walk around bed which is much easier to make and find sheets for. The kitchen has a 3 burner stove with oven and microwave. Those are a few items I could see. You have to find what works for you and your family.
Were those quotes all inclusive (taxes, doc fees, dealer fees etc.) or the base price? That is something else that needs to be considered.
