Great post, thanks for the reminder. Yep, checklists save my bacon.

My Rand Mcnally GPS has a checklist feature and we use it every time.

I haven't done anything stupid. I blow right past stupid and go straight for totally ridiculous, or beyond. I lead an interesting life.

1bigmess,
I'm right there with you--start of current AK trip, turned too sharp leaving fuel stop and hit the pump guard post. Estimate of $5900. Luckily, didn't stop the trip.
Been towing since '78, lots of time to build up a resume...

Few weeks ago I got distracted talking to some friends while unhooking the TT. I removed the TT off the truck ball before removing the weight dist. bars. Man was that dumb...good thing I always carry a small 5 ton jack cause that's what it took to get those bars off. Lesson learned!!!

Did a Stupid

You and I both know these two mishaps probably won't happen again. Thanks for being honest about your adventure.
My bottle jack saved my bacon also. Safe travels.

I would like to have a dollar for every time I overlooked something on my list.

Haste makes waste as they say.

Well put ... I can do enough stupid things on my own. I don't need to repeat the stupid things everyone else is doing.

Did I read right? Did you not know that your wife was in the trailer?

One thing of which I am most careful. I HAVE to know where EVERYBODY is before moving anything. With two little kids, they can quickly get into a dangerous situation.

I heard a story of a guy backing up his trailer and assuming his wife was paying attention. While guiding him back, she got distracted. I won't go into the gruesome details, but the story didn't end well.

I totally agree! Especially if no one was hurt in the act of my stupidity

Life is one lesson after another, hopefully we are taking notes each time we realize something significant has occurred so we don't repeat our mistakes.

The scary thing is, I never seem to run out of new and innovative ways to be stupid.

Thank you for sharing idnative1948
. We ALL need to be reminded to take our time and be thorough about both setting up and breaking down no matter what the conditions.

I appreciate everyone sharing their mishaps. That's one way to learn so I can try to avoid them! I'm waiting on my turn to screw something up. It's not "if", it's "when". I'll post for the masses to review and critique.

I would not worry about it. You did the right thing, stop and re-hash what happened.
We all make mistakes. That is life. Just follow a good check list and everyone out of trailer before moving levelers, chocks or jacks.

All of our extended family has picked up on a catch phrase of mine whenever they do something dumb:

"...I'm too stupid to own a camper!!"

GEE, I've never made a mistake with my TT :-)
Then again, I believe in the 5th amendment also!
