Question Extended Service Contracts

My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a new travel trailer from Jayco, which has a two year warranty. The dealer is now showing us a service contract from "Protective Asset Protection" Xtra Ride. Does anyone have any opinions as to the value of such a plan?

I'm not sure why you would want an extended contract on a travel trailer unless the plan was VERY inexpensive. There is not a lot of expensive items to fail on it as opposed to a Motorhome. As a first time purchaser of a 2 year old coach, I took out a warranty from Xtra Ride when I bought it 2 years ago and I had to use it last month. They paid for the towing and the repair, less the $500 deductible, no questions asked.

We purchased a new Jayco in August 2012 and was advised by our dealer if we wanted to add the Jayco Extended warranty to do it just prior to the original 2 year warranty expiration. I don't know what the differences are between the Jayco and Protective Asset Protection are. Some people say not to and just bank the money if repairs are ever needed. It also depends on how long you plan on keeping it also. I'm tossed between getting one or not. We have been very happy with the quality of the Jayco but have had it in twice for warranty. 1st time was right after we purchased it the tank flusher connection was leaking and last year one of the gray tank valves was not shutting completely. Good luck with your purchase.

Why would you buy a warranty? It's brand new and covered for 2 years. Dealers will prey on your fear of the unknown to make an extra buck... I would wait, get to know your camper, and then decide in 2 years from now what to do... By then you will be in a whole different mind set. In the meantime, use the money to enjoy it! Congrats on the new camper and good luck!

Mine is 2 years+ old and has never been back to the dealer. So far I have had no issues that I didn't cause... I replaced my kitchen sink but bought a stainless one online, after I broke the sink by leaving something heavy in there and hitting some rough spots. Cost me less than $150- and about an hour of work, rather than $375- the dealer wanted for the original plastic unit. Replaced my pump because I stupidly let it freeze... another $75- and 15 minutes work. None of these come up to the deductable... I never buy extended warranties...

Having owned truck campers, travel trailers, and 5ers, I can safely say I would not buy an extended service contract for any one of those. The appliances come with their own warranty, in any type of RV. Today, a Dometic refrigerator has a 3 yr. warranty providing it is serviced annually by a professional. Your trailer has a 2 yr. warranty itself. Pay yourself and and bank a little monthly for after the warranty expires, after 2 years you might have a hefty nestegg.
A MH on the other hand, is a very complex machine. The owner may well benefit from purchasing an extended service contract, I know I have.

Hi,we've just purchased a bigger trailer...18bh Apex. They want to sell us a $1600.00 warranty that would give us an extra 6 yrs. if there are no claims we get our money back. But it doesn't cover anything structural. The trailer isn't hi-tech. Our little 2008 never had any problems with anything. I think we will skip their warranty but if you have a motor home it might be worth it.

Also, many extended service policies have so many exclusions it's laughable.
I got burnt twice, never again.

Absolutely not, especially at that price. For reference, I paid $4,000 for a 4 year on my Motorhome and even with all that complexity I am wondering if it will be worth it. I certainly would not get a warranty on something much less mechanical like a trailer.

If you don't know much about them, I would have gotten a pre-purchase 3rd party expert inspection. The money spent there will be worth it.

No, take a look at what $3100 will replace and go from there.

Extended service contract.

Thanks for your advise.

As I am buying it from a Route 66 dealer, so they will be doing a PDE-Pre delivery examination and make sure everything is right, so in that case do i still need to get a expert opinion before purchasing.

Please advise.

Thanks
