I bought a 2008 Keystone Hornet 26ft Travel Trailer from a friend of a friend of a friend! I was offered a 4 year warranty from a Rv dealer friend of mine for $1300. .... the trailer appears to be super clean... SHOULD I purchase the warranty?? And is that a reasonable price???

No and no. Those policies usually have more holes in them than a 10# onion sack. Just my opinion of course. Put the $1300 in a Mason jar and I bet you'll have money left in 4 years.

My dealer suggested a $1800 5 year warranty. I requested the warranty company info to do research. My research revealed that I could buy the same warranty direct for $800. Not to mention the warranty companies F rating by the BBB. So if you reallllly want a warranty, buy direct and do your homework. I personally took the mason jar route.

The most expensive repair you will probably ever have is a damage due to leaks and the warranty won't cover it. Personally I would not buy a warranty from a dealer. I like the mason jar idea.

Don't use the water bath method for the jar with the "George's" in it.

Since we are brand new to RV ownership we decided to get the extended. $1300 for seven years. Bought direct and the company has a A reputation with BBB. Only covers the appliances and Systems on the trailer but I figure if either the AC or refrigerator goes we would be close to a breakeven deal.

Typically we don't buy EW's. So this was a first for us.

The dealer markup on these Extended warranties is abot 100%. If you have to have one, shop direct and bargin.

When you say don't use a dealer - to shop direct - is there a particular warranty site you could recommend?

The large warranty companies are brokers. Just like an insurance agent. They sell your contract to third party surety companies. So you buy thru say "rvprotection.net" but your coverage is thru mom and pop's warranty company.

Insurance is betting on disaster. We purchased an extended warranty and we are glad we did. YMMV.

There are just to many "outs" for the extended service contract companies. Put a set amount for repairs in an emergency savings account "every" month and you will always know you can have it and not be subject to the word games and hassle of dealing with a company. They are not in the business to please you or be your friend but to make money. Having an extended service contract may give you a warm and fuzzy feeling that your covered but many do not realize or can comprehend the amount of hassle that you will go through to get something covered. The companies can and will cover every base before they part with their money to pay you.
