I had the same issue, I just dump twice before leaving the campsite. when I have an issue with the tank reader I throw conditioner and a few other things in and the dump after two hours twice. seems to clean it right up.

I use White King D detergent with softener in it, 1 box lasts about 2-3 years. I also use an enzyme type additive in both black & grey tanks. Woks great for us. When we leave for home, I flush tanks thoroughly and add about 1/2 cup of baking soda in each tank and put several gallons of water in each to let it all slosh around while driving. So far, so good.

Pine sol from the dollar store. Add to black and grey tank, travel and dump. Always have a third of tank of fluid when adding the pine sol then dump at the next FHU CG. In really tough situations with bad to no sensor reading add a cheap conditioner. This is a system I was informed of by a fellow neighbor in my RV community that specializes in cleaning RV tanks and industrial holding tanks. It works 100% guarantee.

Call me cheap or thrifty, but is there any other substitutes for the softener? Research on Google shows that one can "formulate" a water softener using hair conditioner....again, think this would cause a problem in the tank? Normally conditioner might be as expensive (or maybe moreso), but I have four bottles from my mom who did not like the stuff she purchased (and dollar store stuff might be cheap, as well, if it works).....
Just got 2 42oz boxes of RainDrop water softener from Amazon (I think $11)
