First trailer

Dumped my motorhome last year and now looking for a trailer. I'm towing with a 2016 Expedition EL. It has a gvwr of 6600 so I have been looking for something under 5000. Is that a reasonable place to start? If so, does anyone have any suggestions as to brand, etc.

I have also thought about updating my towing to the HD version but I'm not sure what all I would need for that. It would up the gvwr to 9000+ . Anyone have any experience with this? Maybe this should be another post in a different forum.

I'd certainly want a weight distributing hitch to tow most anything. How loaded will the car be when traveling? 2 adults? children? big dog or two? It all adds up. Here's the Ford Spec sheet on towing with your vehicle.

This is a fine place for this discussion, IMO. Don't sweat it. Lots of fine options 5000 lbs and under in a TT but the only real question is do they meet your needs?

Lance would be my preference in an ultralight, but that's me. Or one of the eggs like a casita or a scamp if you want something on the small and cute scale. Some of the pods like T@b are great, some are, well, junk.

As to what's appropriate, I'd recommend getting weighed at the scales (loaded for camping if it's possible) and getting good, accurate numbers to work from. It's cheap, easy, and there's no guessing

It would be cheaper to trade for a Tow vehicle that already has the HD tow package. Different gearing, bigger radiator, transmission cooler, power steering cooler, bigger alternator, wiring for brake controller, wiring for trailer electrical. All of that will cost thousands and in the end an Expedition is not the best choice for a tow vehicle. I had one with the HD tow package and it was OK but not the most stable since it has independent rear suspension and no rear sway bar versus a solid rear axle.

What is the cargo capacity of the vehicle? Most can pull a lot more than they can carry.

700 lbs. of tongue weight eats about half of your available cargo capacity. To that you add family and gear. 700 lbs is the loaded for the road tongue weight of my 5000 lb dry weight trailer.

There is nothing mystical about it, tow vehicles were designed to carry certain amounts. Dry weight mean little. You are better off with max trailer weight and figuring about 13 % on the tongue.

A guess is a guess and they are usually light. The CAT scales tell the true weight.

JAYCO makes a few different smaller models that you could tow with your vehicle.
It would be worth checking out the different floor plans.
Yes I am bias with Jayco.
Lance also specializes in lighter trailers but are a bit more expensive

According to Ford, the max trailer weight is 6600 the way my Expedition is set up right now. I just got it so it is here to stay for a while. There will usually be 1 adult and 4 (40 lb) dogs riding along. Not much as far as other cargo. I had planned on getting a weight distributing hitch. The vehicle is wired for a brake controller. I will check out Jayco and Lance. I have looked at Forest River EVO.I know that the model number is the length of the living area. Do they use the total length in most ads?

A friend of mine got a new Lance 22xx. It is really nice, but is about $10k more than everything I have looked at. I recently saw a Keystone Premier. Does anyone know anything about them? Still need to look at Jayco.

Fiberglass Trailers

Review the Fiberglass Campers. Look at the resale value. The used ones are usually sold within a few days. The build time right now is about a year. There is LIL Snoozy, Escape, Big Foot, Castia, Scamp & others. The build quality are very good.

These guys always seem to have a nice variety of Snowbird used inventory, not too far from you.
Example: Winnebago Micro Minnie 1706FB
