small amounts of metal shavings would be normal during break in. Continuing to get them over a longer time, like months or three camping seasons (depending on how much you tow, of course), should be cause for concern. It would be a good idea at this point to investigate by finding the tongue weight, checking that the WD is adjusted properly according to the manual, and a good cleaning, inspection, and greasing of the hitch head.
