I'm looking for a generator to use for some dry camping, boondocking, long trips ect..... I think I would need a 3,000 and would like a Honda or yamaha but I can't afford it. Anyone know of a generator that is similar to those but cheaper?

Buy a Honda/Yamaha and have a quiet generator. Most others are way too loud.

Read the specs for the Boliey PRO3600SI generator- Home
then compare them to a Honda 3,000 and Yamaha 2400. That's what persuaded me to buy one July 2008. It's been running fine and powering our 5er ever since. This winter we were without power at the stixNbrix for 24 hrs. It ran continuously, except for re-fueling. When I went to start it (I hadn't started it for 3 months-my bad) I had to give it a whiff of starting fluid on that 0*F day, but it then started on the 2nd pull. After that first startup it ran smoothly and re-started on the 2nd pull.
I would like to have a new electric-start model, but at this rate I'll die before my pull-start Boliey wears out.

Champion.. $299.00 and they meet the NPS and Forest Svc noise limits.

Camping World now sells them.. also Tractor Supply and Cabelas..

Had ours for two years.. works great.. not too loud.. 1/6 the price of a Honda.. runs all night on one tank of gas..

Great thanks for the info. I will look into this generator. Like I said before would just use it for boon-docking on long RV road trips so $300 doesn't sound so bad. Even if the noise level is a little higher then a Honda it would be fine in a Walmart parking lot.

100% of our RV generator use has been in Flying J parking lots..

One night in West Memphis (headed to Williams for the 2010 Rally) the 5er next to us also had a Champion.. we hummed the 90deg night away in harmony.

No problems with running the ac I assume. Is it worth the money over all?

Ran the A/C as needed.. tried it in a CG in Flagstaff (7200 ft) and it fired the A/C fine.. it did groan starting the A/C in Abilene, close to 100 deg, but it started it..

Very happy with it..

How many hours do you get out of a tank of gas on the Champion?

In the RV it runs all night.. but it's used for truck stop sleep overs not an evening of A/C and TV followed by sleep, it would need a re-fuel for that.

I have run out at home during a, power failure, but in the confusion of the moment we never noted exactly how long it ran.

The Champion 3500/4000 is a "Honda Clone" (not the super quiet inverter Honda). It's one of a slew of Chinese generators that all look the same ('ceptin for color). The current hot topic with the "Gen-heads" is the $249 3000 watt gen on sale ar Pep Boys this week/month (also a "Honda clone").
