I bought the Champion 3100 Inverter/Generator from the Super Gen website. I called Champion's excellent service line with some pre-buy questions and they sent me to SuperGen because they have the best price and the largest volume sales. Paul at Supergen matched the best price I could find $878 and shipped free with no sales tax.http://www.amazon.com/Champion-Power...=champion+3100 This amazon link may change so just search for Champion 3100. Champion service centers and parts are easy to come by if you ever need them (I haven't yet). The unit is rated 58 db @23ft and only weighs 80 lbs. Lots of good reviews.

This past weekend, there were campers in the overflow area with several types of generators. Two class A diesel pushers had the Onan whisper Quiet diesel sets and thay were very quiet. Once class B with a gas Onan 2800, one trailer with a Champion 3600 and two trailers with Honda EU2000i's.

You could hear the Champion several sites away over the Hondas that were 1/2 the distance. Next loudest was the Onan 2800. The diesel sets (while some on the order of 8 to 10 kW) were slightly louder than the Hondas. One was a pair of EU2000i's in parallel.

Quiet hours were from 10PM to 6 AM and they all shut them down promptly at 10 PM.

I would look for the Honda EU series on Craigslist and get them used rather than the new contractor grade generators.

My pair of Honda UE2000i generators have never failed me and are well worth the money.

Ken

Most of the quietness of any generator comes from the panels covering the engine. It's the engine making the most noise, not from the exhaust.

Diesel generators are inherently much much quieter because they spin at half the rpm as gas generators. The problem is they are really heavy and cost quite a bit more.

Has anyone used or herd the 2000w generac genny? Its the one like the Honda eu2000i? I'm looking at one on Craigslist. All I care about is not making people mad when I boondock, recharging my battery and maybe watching a TV program or two.
