Help! Travel Trailer Width...Did I just make a big mistake?
So this week I was down in Maryland looking for a travel trailer. Me and my wife have been thinking of getting one for some time now to travel to upstate New York and across America to different National Parks. While we where in Maryland we found one we really liked I went ahead with financing set and getting the insurance i made a 500 dollar deposit. I am suppose to pick it up tommorrow at 1 pm.
Just a few hours ago a friend of mine was asking how wide it was I told him its 8'6 and 19ft long. He told me to run away from it because it is to wide to take anywhere. I wont be able to drive on any roads in New Jersey (where I am from) or take it to upstate New york which is a big reason im getting it. I dont understand why they make somthing to wide for the roads to began with.
What is the deal?

Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. Most all RV's are 8'6 and that is a legal width in all states. But your friend shouldn't feel bad.
The RV dealer I work for pays the state an oversize vehicle permit fee. I asked why. Was told the awnings and such are wider that 8'6. I had to show him the state law that says RV's are exempt.

102" is the maximum width allowed.
You will find some construction zones and driveways too narrow, but they will tell you in ample time.
Any US or Interstate route will be fine, as well as most State Routes in construction zones. They have to allow for tractor-trailers which are almost all 102" wide.
You need to be aware of your width, but most of the time it'll be fine. (Kinda like the height of your rig. How low of a bridge can you get under?)

Well this is putting my mind a little at ease but I am a little confused by something I read on the internet (as usaual). From what I understand 102 is legal only on interstates and illegal off interstates so how the heck does anyone get anywhere. Also does anyone know if I would be able to get that thing into National Parks?

Geez. I marvel at the lack of common sense sometimes. Of course manufacturers would not build, and dealers not sell, RVs that could not be taken down the highways all across America. Its what we do with them.

You’ll be fine. Lots of box trucks drive through those areas and if they fit, you’ll fit.

So just for some clarification It is a Intech Sol and I would be pulling it with a 2017 chevy Colorado. Do i need some special mirror adapters or something because of the width.

Not recommending these in particular, but something like this would be good.
https://www.amazon.com/CIPA-10200-Ch...s%2C331&sr=8-9
They slip over your factory mirrors.

This right here. Many big rigs are 8.5'/102" wide, and they get where they need to when they need to. I'm not gonna tell you to stop listening to what your "friend" says, but I'll tell you it's always good to double or triple check the things they say, like you have done here with this issue.
My travel trailer is 8.5'/102" wide, and I'll get it where I need to when I need to as long as the road has enough room for me to fit.

Yes. I fit just fine in Yosemite NP, Organ Pipe Cactus NP, and anywhere else I've gone with it including US Forest Service campgrounds.

The problem of not being officially allowed on secondary highways, tends to only be an issue in a few eastern states. Even here the allowed routes for 102 inch wide loads extends to most major highways, as well as many roads connecting to them.
